DJ Starski.... A Premiere Canadian DJ Export That Is Throwin' Heat In The Crooklyn Clan Vault!
Saturday, October 27, 2007
Herbie Hancock The image of Double K scratching left a mark on DJ Starski that would last a lifetime and would open doors to an amazing, evolving career in the DJ and entertainment world. Having been in the industry for a time frame of roughly ten to fifteen years, DJ Starski has been working diligently to develop his own style. That is truly how he works too...with style. I have listened to numerous DJ's now and have come to appreciate quite a range of abilities and styles. However, I have to say that DJ Starski is THE TRANSITION MAN!
This DJ can bring songs together as if they were meant to be married and procreate!! The offspring is complete candy to the ear; true elixir for the dancing soul. I must highlight one of my favorites and in my opinion, a mash-up that will become a complete Starski classic. It is, "I Get B More Money". He has taken the group The Ojay's, "For The Love of Money" and paired it with an absolutely perfectly-timed and cut B More mix. Then to top it off (and we say thank you to DJ Starski for revealing the, "Colonel's Secret Ingredients") he's added a dash of Audio Two, "Top Billin" and LL Cool J, "Doin" It" to get the perfect ensemble. I am not a huge fan of the adjective, "Mash", as sometimes that word sounds derogatory. This remix is an exact and well-thought-out rearrangement of bits and pieces of music melded together to create a completely sweat-inducing dance number! It's an amazing song and it's worked it's way onto the top spot on The Buzz chart and into Fetty Be's soon-to-be "Hall of Fame" songs! Starski has this innate ability to combine a range of songs and audio bits, in such a way that it really is redefining the song into a completely new direction. His creations are more than just the work of a DJ that can jack a song up, add some base and call it a remix. Starski truly CAN mix.
When I listen to his mixes and "mash-ups", another DJ talent power house comes to mind in terms of similarity of style and that is The Rock-it Scientists. These DJ's all seem to have mastered the ability to recall sounds from such a vast range of music from many different genres and then dissect and recreate...only this time it is no Frankenstein that they churn off of their turntable, but some glorious, voluptuous mix that will melt your ears and seduce your senses.
Funny enough, DJ Starski must be drawn to the work of The Rock-it Scientists because he has included them in his recent Halloween 2007 Mix. Greatness is always drawn to greatness, right?! As for transitions, they truly can make or break a song and the balance of whether or not a dance floor will stay packed and the collective grinding continues. Well, Starski is a master at this and smoooooth is all I can say. You need to listen to his cd's or better yet, go see him live at his Toronto Residencies: Made in Maro Fridays at Maro http://www.maro.ca/ and Charm Saturdays inside State Theatre http://www.hookmeup.to/
DJ Starski is a rising star and as noted early, he has had his nose to the, "turntable" rather than grindstone, pumping out the hits. As result, he has been recognized for his success by: being Runner Up in the 1996 Atlantic Records Kool Dj Red Alert Mixtape Contest, receiving the 2003 Soul Choice Record Pool DJ of the Year, achieving the highly respected label of a Crooklyn Clan Vault DJ and lastly assuming the title of Owner and Operator of Traxx Records East. DJ Starski is an artist with an intense ability to reach deep within a song and pull out it's very best. He covers all club styles and promises to meet your mood wherever that may be. Why I got into Djing: I got into djing because I love music. I remember that when I was 10 years old, the two biggest influences on me were Herbie Hancock’s “Rock It” and the movie “Beat Street”. I remember as I watched Double K scratch and mix, I thought to myself, “That is for me.” So, as I got older I started to collect the vinyl. I bought some used 1200’s and the rest is history.
