Crooklyn Clan "Westcoast Killer" DJ Cobra Is The Sage Amongst The Master Mixers! Beware...
Thursday, November 1, 2007
It's time folks to "Sweep The Leg Johnny", a favorite expression of DJ Cobra's and get to the bottom of the story behind this incredibly hawt celebrity Westcoast DJ! In order to give you an accurate picture of this talented artist, I've had to spend some enjoyable time absorbing his music, reading over his survey responses and trying to grasp the complete picture of who and what Andrew Bagg, alias DJ Cobra is all about. On the surface, Cobra has been a master at creating his self-image through self-promotion, networking and making valuable connections with the "right" people. People who hold the power to influence and change the course or direction of lives in the entertainment industry and in this case, it's been DJ Cobra's life. At a very young age, DJ Cobra began saving his lunch money in order to start collecting music....a passion/borderline obsession that in time would come to shape the man that he is today.
Bad Boy Bill Mmm, where have I heard that story before?? Oh yes, Bad Boy Bill with his 40000+ LP collection! I am starting to think that all DJ's must possess this genetic trait to stockpile music at an young age!!! This early infatuation with music led Andrew to develop his interest and it certainly wasn't nurtured in a classroom setting, but rather in a university campus radio station (University of Arizona KAMP Radio). Over a relatively short amount of time, DJ Cobra quickly rocketed himself to the top of the charts through his sheer brilliance and talent with manipulating music. It was Hip-Hop music at that time and definitely cutting edge work. For this DJ, his pure love and deep understanding of music enabled him to maneuver his way through the politics of the industry and keep on the endless road of opportunity that creative genius can offer. DJ Cobra has such a wealth of knowledge of music spanning back twenty years, that his vast knowledge truly rises to the surface when his collective works are viewed in whole. DJ Cobra stays on top by mixing up the latest mainstream hits like Ayo Technology and Crank That for example, to keep the club-goers and his followers appetites satiated. However, what I believe is most notable about his mixes and mashes, is that Cobra will mix in a song that he's pulled right out of left field and completely takes the listener by surprise at the compatibility of the songs. He knows music so well, that he is able to do that and he is not intimidated or pressured to conform to only what's current. He will utilize unconventional songs or audio bits to enhance a Top 40 hit. He has the ability to pull an "oldie" or classic hit off of the shelf, dust it off and make it grind in a way that only the best DJ's can!
If I were to create a visual here, I would say it would be comparable to going into a facility for elderly folk, escorting a grand lady to the dance floor and giving her a chance to unleash her inner youth in a dance of glory! As the Cobra himself said in The 2007 Buzz Survey, "I don't concern myself with genre. Good music is good music". It doesn't seem to matter to this artist if a mash-up uses ONLY the most popular contemporary hits. Classics are revisited by Cobra in his work and he has done this countless times in his repertoire. In examining his collection of works available at The Crooklyn Clan Vault (http://www.crooklynclan.net/), of which he is an official affiliate of under "Westcoast Killers", the originality of his songs are mind-blowing. Some would say that DJ Cobra's forte is Old School/80's, but I beg to differ, in that he is a specialist in the Classics of All-time. This DJ just won't be pigeon-holed and if you look at the range of the artists that he is using in his mixes, it will reinforce this notion that all music is fair game to DJ Cobra.
It is a winning combination indeed and one that has given him record achievements such as: being responsible for the only independent non-licensed music compilation (Mixtape Gods) that’s ever charted in the national top 100 (according to the Music Monitor Network), being named Mixtape DJ of the Year over internationally renowned DJs backed by major labels, being named one on the best “Hollywood” deejays by 944 magazine’s September 2006....to name just a few! He is also associated with a group of incredibly influential and powerful individuals in the music and entertainment industry which include: Playboy, Warner Brothers, Interscope Records, ABC, 944 Magazine, Ed Hardy, Tag Jeans, MTV, HBO, Paramount Pictures, VH1, Courvoiser, Kia Motors, Weinstein Group, Vibe Magazine, E! Entertainment, Victoria's Secret, Virgin Records, DreamWorks, Madonna, Ray Ramono, Bob and Harvey Weinstein, P. Diddy (aka Puff Daddy), Eminem, Prince, Paul Rosenberg, Tyra Banks, Madonna, Lindsey Lohan, Nikki Hilton, Lara Flyn Boyle, Nelly, Mandy Moore, Hillary Duff, Ludacris, Ashanti, James Caan, Spin, LA Times, Hits Magazine, Radio & Records, LA.com, and many more! Cobra can also be found in the TV world and in 2006 he became the official deejay for ABC’s TV show, “Comics Unleashed”(see picture below). He has taken his intimate knowledge of music and pushed it forth now into the AV world and is also starting to get quite a reputation for mashin' up videos. DJ Cobra has a sense of timing...not unlike a real cobra, that can strike with deadly accuracy. As noted recently by Matthew Ross on The Daily Reel, " What happens when you mash-up the biggest train wreck of a performance in MTV history with the bizarre viral-video rant that resulted from it? Believe it or not, something pretty f'in' fresh....On Sept. 9, Britney Spears put the final nail in the coffin that is her career when she appeared doped-up, out-of-shape, and in dire need of a lip-sync tune-up during a pathetic rendition of her new single, "Gimme More," at the MTV Video Music Awards. The very next day, Chris Crocker, a sexually ambiguous, hysterical young lad from Tennessee posted an impassioned defense of the troubled pop-tart on his YouTube page. The clip went viral -- in a very big way -- and before Crocker could say "drama queen," he had himself a reality series. It's safe to say that neither clip is an example of bonafide artistic talent. The same cannot be said, however, for this remix of the two vids by AV maestro DJ Cobra. A well-known turntablist from Los Angeles, Cobra also boasts some nifty video-editing chops. And, as the old saying goes, he's got a knack for making chicken salad out of chicken shit." (http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/music/topics/dj%20cobra Sept 26/07)
The story of Andrew Bagg, alias DJ Cobra is one of "The American Dream". He has followed his passion and has remained true to his first love, music. He hasn't compromised his style or altered his vision to break under the pressures of the industry. DJ Cobra is a leader, not a follower and sets his own beat. His foundation years inside the radio disc jockey community were truly formative and provided this artist with an education in music that no classroom could ever provide. He was born with a natural ability that just needed the right situation for it to be honed and nurtured. However, it was Andrew's intelligence and stealth....just like his namesake the Cobra....that made the music world very aware of his potential and force. It only brings to mind the question, who could ever be in the presence of a Cobra and not be in awe?! DJ Cobra....we think, "You've Got The Right Stuff Baby!!!"

THE BUZZ DJ SURVEY
1. What inspired you to pick your DJ Name?

3. What and who are some of your major influences?
Hip-Hop in general has been my biggest influence. So artists like Rakim, EPMD, Early Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Tribe etc. made me want to dig for their samples as well as explore other artists in the Genre. I owned hundreds of records before I ever owned turntables. I used to have to listen to them on my parents old school turntable.
4. Biggest reward about being a DJ?
Being a DJ is really a lifestyle based around the love of music. The fact that I get paid to do something I love is the biggest reward.

5. Biggest pet peeve about being a DJ?
All the bullshit with egos and hatred. Life is too short for all of that. A lot of deejays need to learn to just do them and not focus and hate on what the next mans doing.
6. What is the best party you ever spun at?
To many great ones to mention but the first time I opened for Puffy back in 2001 in front of 10,000+ people. I had the entire arena singing along to every record I played. That was really special.
7. If you could mix at a club or party anywhere, where would it be and with whom?
Time Square New Years Eve with Prince as my hype man would be the ultimate party although it would be freezing.
8. In what cities have you spun? Are you a resident DJ at any clubs right now?
Los Angeles to New York and everywhere in between. I have spun in atleast 40 or 50 American cities as well as in other countries. Currently I have residencies in Los Angeles, San Francisco, St. Louis, Kansas City, San Diego and Cincinnati. It is best to check my Myspace page to find out my details with the clubs as well as all my other DJ-related stuff.

9. What is the hottest club you have ever been to either as a DJ or patron?
My boy Johnny Adler threw a Rave for his Bar Mitzvah back in 1993. Maybe the greatest party ever. I was 12 but it was still legendary.
10. Do you plan out your sets or do you play to the crowd's reaction?
I have tricks I might have planned out that I might want to incorporate if possible but I always play of crowd reaction and I try to push them as far as they will let me take them.
A little intimate party with DJ Cobra at the helm!!11. If you could design a club, name three important aspects of it's layout
Deejay booth centrally located in front of the dance-floor. A bathroom near the DJ Booth and a good lighting and sound system.
12. Techno/Trance of Mash-Up/Hip-hop?
I don't concern myself with genre. Good music is good music
13. East Coast or West Cost?
No such thing anymore. Hip-Hop has evolved
14. Mac or PC?
Mac all day... I've been rocking Mac since 1984.
15. Top favorite 3 tracks of all time:
I can't name just 3 but here are three solid ones
Isaac Hayes - Walk on By
The Animals - House of a Rising Sun
Ohio Players - Funky Worm
Steppin' out with the classics DJ Cobra-style....and luvin' every minute of it!! Oh yeah babies!!
