DJ Bryanroot Is A Spectrum of Artistry Both On The Decks and In Spray Culture!
Friday, October 3, 2008
To say that our next feature artist has a colorful past...is NO WORD of a lie. We are so pumped to be able to bring you this next artist, who can truly claim that title in all aspects of the word. Bryanroot IS an artist and master of not only the decks, but also of the spray culture and art form called Ghetto Graffiti.
Deeply immersed in the music and culture evolving out of the street and club vibe of Brooklyn, DJ Bryanroot was swept along by a mass wave of cultural change that occurred during the mid-late 80's and early 90's. It ultimately molded, shaped and influenced the man into the creative individual that he is today. Between "subway bombing" from the age of 15 and developing mixtapes for friends to enjoy and critique...Bryan was always an active teen looking to self-express and to share his enthusiasm for life, music and the nightlife scene. He accomplished this endless need to create via messing around with the top music at the time and pursuing his passion for beats relentlessly. Bryan has been an active professional DJ for over 10 years now and has long since retired his spray can obsession (LOL)!
However, his enthusiasm for the art form of DJing has made this form of self-expression a lifetime pursuit. Once the need to spin is in the blood, it never goes away, so we have discovered after having worked with so many DJ's. Bryan is truly all about pleasing his audience and ensuring that a legitimate party is happening once he takes over the decks.
This artist is an individual that immerses himself into the heart of a party and he has developed a keen sense over the years of how to maintain the delicate balance of following a crowd's lead, with regards to their musical tastes and preferences. DJ Bryanroot appears to have a sixth sense about people and he knows how to effectively survive in the very political world that exists inside the DJ community and music industry. As with all professions, there is an on-going struggle between colleagues and professionals to literally jockey amongst themselves to achieve recognition, which then leads to better kick backs (i.e. gigs and venues) within the industry.

Knowing the power players and who to align with is also important and key to Bryan's rapid success. From the very beginning of his career, Bryan quickly established who is mentors would be and has remained faithful to those individuals. He has been an avid student of the DJ art form, and for the most part he has been a self-taught, self-made artist.
Despite being asked to join remixing services, Bryan has this to say about his choice not to participate: "I have been asked to join...but I don't because I like my stuff to be original, so when people hear it in the clubs they are like "Oh shit...that's hot!" I just don't want other people having my music..."( DJ Bryanroot, Sept. 29/08) Bryan is dedicated to "the art" of DJing and not just to making money. Not that he is opposed to making money, but maintaining a high level of originality and genuine edits for his peeps, is important to this colorful individual. He most definitely possesses a diverse spectrum in terms of his repertoire of industry experience and although his personal preferences in music falls primarily in the Hip Hop genre, Bryan is open to all forms of music. As with the thrill, rush and "addiction" (DJ Bryanroot, 10-04-08) of creating a piece of Urban Ghetto Graffiti art....so too is it exciting for Bryan to manipulate the decks spontaneously and in a responsive manner. When artwork is over-thought, it quite often loses it's edge. A Graffiti artist doesn't have time to over plan his/her work....it's executed under pressure and with precision. This ability to excel and work under pressure is Bryan's forte on the decks and he has this to say about planning out his sets: "I always go with the crowd...whatever keeps um movin' works 4 me!" This is trademark Bryanroot. He is always bringing it back to the moment, the people, and giving them their voice...He empowers people with his music and puts them in touch with their own internal need to liberate themselves from societal bonds.
DJ Bryanroot is a gatekeeper with the ability to manipulate many forms of media and use them as a tool to channel and release his own internal voice. The desire to help free people seems to be a theme where DJ Bryanroot is concerned.... This characteristic actually unites both sides of Bryan's musical and visual artistic personality. Graffiti art is a political statement about putting power back in the hands of the public and playing music for people is also empowering, as this process liberates the soul to self-express.
In the end, despite Bryan's social nature, his work is not about him continuously drawing attention to himself, but rather what he said in his exclusive Buzz Survey: "Just making people forget about their worries for a few hours and making them dance to the best music I can offer. " (DJ Bryanroot, Buzz DJ Survey).
