Monday, December 15, 2008
As you will discover through NeilBeat's candid responses to our Buzz exclusive DJ Survey, he is an artist that always strives to achieve a superior level of quality in all that he touches. With roots emerging from the House genre and a mad respect for Plasmic Honey, it wasn't long before NeilBeats bridged the genre gap and made the jump to a full-time Hip-Hop DJ. In time you will see that NeilBeats was part of the first generation of DJ's to start using the hybrid between Hip-Hop and House. This cutting edge genre is sometimes called Hype or GhettoTech. The classics and retro tracks are still a very important resource for DJ NeilBeats and just as any painter would use the full spectrum of colors to deepen the perspective of a painting, so too does NeilBeats access all music to enhance the complexity of his remixing and/or producing.
As a budding artist in a very competitive industry, NeilBeats soon found his mentors and role models under the direct influence of the notorious, internationally known remixing crew The Crooklyn Clan. Just as DJ Sizzahandz and DJ Riz were establishing their business, 17 year old NeilBeats was kick-starting his own independent business venture in the music industry as well. DJ NeilBeats is a proprietor and owns his own mobile DJ company called Beats Entertainment (http://www.beatsentertainment.net/), in addition to working in the club scene.

DJ NEILBEATS BUZZ EXCLUSIVE DJ SURVEY RESPONSES!!
My first name is Neil and I also own a Mobile DJ company called Beats Entertainment (www.BeatsEntertainment.net). Since I was young, all my friends would call me "Beats" and it just stuck. So, now I'm "NeilBeats".

2. What kind of music do you like to spin?
When I first started to get into DJing, I was 15 years old and I would go down to the local record store and would buy both Hip Hop and House records. I really got into House and I actually started getting paid to spin House in clubs by the age 16. I always enjoyed both genres, but eventually I switched over to Hip Hop and it's been my main set in clubs. However, I also incorporate House music & classics joints into my sets.

3. What and who are some of your major influences?
Without a doubt one of my first Hip Hop records was an AV8. The Crooklyn Clan (DJ Sizzahandz & DJ Riz) remixes were dope, along with the other dude on that label. Their records made me want to DJ because I felt the energy of their mixes and wanted to be the DJ to play them in the clubs. I was also very into House music and a very big fan of Plasmic Honey. (Sal Parm - Scribble - Anthony Acid & Christian). As you can see, I rep the local talent.

4. Biggest reward about being a DJ?
DEFINITELY the feeling I get when I know I'm rockin the club and to see every one dancing and enjoying their night. When people are happy, I'm happy! LOL
5. Biggest pet peeve about being a DJ?

6. What is the best party you have ever spun at?
7. If you could mix at a club or party anywhere, where would it be and with whom?
Since I'm from NY, I would want to DJ at the hottest spot at the time in either Vegas, LA, or Miami, and with who.... I would say any high ranking DJ that had never heard of me before.

8. In what cities have you spun? Are you a resident DJ at any clubs right now?
So far, I've DJed in NYC, Atlantic City, Hamptons, Brooklyn, New Jersey & Staten Island. I'm waiting to start travelling. I would definitely enjoy that. At this time, I pretty much get a Guest Spot in a club to play a main set or sometimes Open Up for a well known DJ. I'm all over the place...but nothing really every week. You can check the resume for most of the spots I've worked at or frequent.

9. What is the hottest club you have ever been to either as a DJ or Patron?
As a patron, I enjoy a club that has a nice atmosphere or that is outside. I love The Pool Party at the Hard Rock Hotel (Vegas). It's insane. I really like Opium Gardens (Miami), and also Tryst at the Wynn Hotel (Vegas). As for DJing, as long as the sound system is crisp and loud , the DJ booth is up-to-date with a monitor, and they have a good lighting system with a Light Jockey, then I'm satisfied. Is that too much to ask? LOL
10. Do you plan out your sets or do you play to the crowds reactions?
I do everything on the fly. I don't really plan sets. Maybe there are a few songs I like to play with each other, but that's it. Besides trying to get the most requested tracks on, I try to do something different each time I play. Plus, each club has its own crowd and atmosphere, so I try to play specifically for them.
11. If you could design a club name 3 important aspects of its layout?

How about 4 aspects?
SPACE & SEPARATION - I want my own space. Keep the dance floor, bar and table section separate. If I get a table and I spend a few hundred to thousands I shouldn't have people on top of me either dancing or the table next to me. If I'm drinkin' by the bar I should be able to actually see a bartender not have to squeeze my way in because the bar isn't big enough or there just isn't enough bars to accommodate people.
SOUND & LIGHTING - If the club just looks good but doesn't sound good then you lose the vibe. You should be able to feel the beat and also hear it without distortion, also Intelligent lighting really helps get people into the mood. I like dimly lit places and each section should have its own specific lighting. If its a big club then the dance floor lighting should be sick and have its own Light Jockey. If the lighting is on point with the music build ups and drops look at feel DOPE.
12.Techno/Trance or Mash-up/HipHop?
I play Hip Hop, Electro, Rock, 80s, 90s. I love classics.

13.East Coast or West Coast?
I'm East Coast, so I'm used to it, but I like to put West Coast style into my sets.
14.Mac or PC?
MAC 100%. I have both and I hate PC.

15.Top favorite 3 tracks of all time?
Wow, that's hard. I'll try heres 3 songs that I like to play. Crooklyn Clan - Be Faithfull // Jay-Z - Public Service Announcement // Cubb Rock - Treat'em Right
