Discotech Takes Aura and The Buzz On An Unforgettable Magic Musical Carpet Ride!

Fetty Be is IN THE HOUSE babies and she is so GLAD to be back!! It's been a while and there has been alot of miles crossed on the dance floor recently and BPM's rippin' through the veins!!! The Buzz has been very busy networking with some amazing industry movers and shakers between San Francisco and Vegas. With that said, we have an incredible reflection to share with you all from our most recent DJ encounter. As many of you already know, the collaborative DJ Team of Danny Daze, Joe Maz and Gigamesh comprise the incredibly successful powerhouse remixing crew called Discotech.
This past Saturday night, one of the Buzz's wishes FINALLY came true and the infamous Discotech (Daze and Maz) graced the decks of Aura Nightclub in Pleasanton, CA!!! From humble and deligent beginnings, this group has EXPLODED onto the remix scene and according to the heavy hitters of the business, such as DJ Sizzahandz of The Crooklyn Clan, they are literally making the history books. Danny, "started off DJing weddings and baby showers as a teen and then somehow ended up being an Electro Bass DJ playing at raves till’ the wee hours. He now produces Electro/Hip Hop/Ambient/Ghettotech... Influenced by the sounds of Gorgio Moroder, 2 Live Crew, I-F, Wu-Tang Clan, Eric Prydz, Stuart Price, Early 90’s Hip Hop, Thomas Schumacher, Al Ferox, Justice, and Anthony Rother, his musical education has served him well. (Danny Daze, www.myspace.com/djdannydaze )

Let's have a look at some of Danny's Bio to get a sense of who this dynamic artist is! "Danny Daze's love for music began at the age of 4 when he remembers hearing his father sing opera at various performances such as those at the Miami Grand Hall. Later on at the age of 8 he fell in love with the short-lived rapper, Vanilla Ice, and the break-dancing scene as well. Miami Bass/Booty/Break-Beats called to him when he heard the neighborhood ice cream man blaring 2 Live Crew's “Me So Horny”. With the decision to express himself through music and influences ranging from Pink Floyd to happy hardcore, Daze took the notion to pursue producing and DJing at age 15 where he landed his gig at the local "Hot Wheels" skating rink. He realized he didn't have to pursue lyrical music. Instead he now seeks to let his imagination conjure up wicked programming and speaker-rattling sub-bass.

If you've ever caught Daze in action at a local party, his unique track selection and personal flair during performance will have certainly struck you. Daze toils away in his studio (and in transit due to a busy schedule), producing his own music as well as remixing some fellow Electro and Hip Hop technicians. His latest project, O.M.N.i.A.M.M. (One Mans' Noise is Another Mans' Music) is his label dedicated to progress distinctive music. Daze has built a rep around his unique mixing abilities. Mashing up Retro and Hip Hop beats to give clubs a whole new vibe. You can now easily catch him in action at several of Miami's hottest spots. He has also been recognized and flown to Detroit, New York and Los Angeles to spin at some of their night clubs. You can expect to hear all sots of influences at any of Daze's events. Everything from Salsa to Electro to Hip Hip to Rock to Detroit GhettoTech." ( http://www.musicv2.com/artist/dannydaze ).

Danny's personality is truly enigmatic and he is an absolute joy to watch working the vinyl. With roots as a B-boy, he now dances all over the turntable as he scratches and jigs the mixing board. It's a trend that The Buzz has been noting more and more in the DJ culture and that is the evolution of performance art. This activity behind the decks is almost as intriguing as the music itself. It doesn't appear forced or intentional, yet the way Danny mixes it's a sport unto itself. He is one with multi-levels of technology unfolding as he works and in addition to the interaction with his Discotech partners, it makes it almost like a reality show to experience and is very stimulating to all levels of the senses. Danny has been noted in multiple media reviews, as being characteristically humble and The Buzz witnessed that of BOTH DJ'S, when we were graciously greeted by the group and brought into the "sacred" DJ Booth space. No airs with these turntable bad boyz!!!

Fetty Bu and Fetty Be with Discotech DECKSIDE!!! Deejay M Styles and DJ Kyle Chase in the booth!

Daze and Maz in our opinion should be labelled as purists and they legitimately embrace all music within their work. Joe and Danny hooked up together to create something fresh and different in the South Florida nightclub scene, almost a year ago and they have been ON FIRE ever since. Gigamesh later joined the crew, but we did not get to meet this artist at this time (see his MS page at www.myspace.com/gmeshmusic ). We hope to hear his magic next time around!!

Drawn into the remix industry, Discotech is THE number one mover of club hits and remixes out of DJ Sizzahandz's and DJ Riz's Remix Service for DJ's called, The Crooklyn Clan Vault ( http://www.crooklynclan.net/cart/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=67&s=myTop20). There are over 50 artists housed in The Vault and these mashing magicians are literally soaring over most of the members, in terms of sales. Joe and Danny are both exceptional business minds in addition to DJ's and producers. They have been very successful in promoting their collaborative name and getting the crew on board at The Vault, has also helped to gain further exposure in the club world. Apparently the site averages over 5 million hits a month.

Joe Maze is the balance in the group and brings with him an equally rich background of influences such as DJ AM, Z-Trip, The Crooklyn Clan, Daft Punk, Mylo, Justice, Chromeo, MSTRKRFT, Benny Benassi, Dirty South, Hosh Gureli, Kill Tha DJ, Kevin Scott, DJ Vice, Quincy Jones, DJ Premier, Neptunes, Steve Angello, Shep Pettibone and Rick Rubin. He appears to be a grounded, steady soul and very in tune with the crowd and their desires....He appeared to posses a highly astute ability to read the crowd!! It might make sense to consider his fascinating history at this point. Have a review of his Bio before we take you allllll on a deep dive of our magic carpet ride with Discotech!! "DJ Joe Maz aka Joe Masurka has been fixated on music since a young age. He decided quickly in life that music is something that was going to follow him all his years. Born and raised in the suburbs of Minneapolis, he was exposed to many various different genres of music. From his Dad’s Hank Williams & Johnny Cash , to his Mom’s Led Zepplin, his brother’s Nirvana and many other various influences from Jazz to Hip Hop, House, Funk and Reggae. After realizing he was “the guy” that always had to be in control of the music, Joe became what most of “those guys” become…a DJ. Fast forward 5 years later, Joe is now a fixture in the Minneapolis club scene. As a resident at Spin Nightclub for 2.5 years he was burst into the downtown nightclub industry. In the spring of 2007 Joe Maz was invited to become the Thursday & Saturday resident DJ at Minneapolis’ hottest new spot, Aqua Nightclub. Joe also was invited by 96.3 FM’s Zannie K to become a mixshow DJ during the drive-time 5’O Clock Flava Mix on Tuesdays & Thursdays. In July of 2007 Joe teamed up with DJ Danny Daze (voted Miami’s #1 DJ in two different publications) to create a remixing team called DISCOTECH. Together they began making mash-ups, blends, and remixes and submitted their material to the world’s #1 remix website, http://www.crooklynclan.net/. After hearing the remixes, DJ Sizzahandz of the Crooklyn Clan invited them to the vault personally.DJ Joe Maz specializes in many different genres of music. From hip hop, to house, 80’s, 70’s, funk, and mash-ups. He has opened for world class DJs such as Ferry Corsten, Benny Benassi, and DJ Splyce. Joe was voted the #2 Club DJ in the Twin Cities in 2006 by http://www.twincitiesnightclubs.com/. His Minneapolis reworkings of Fedde Le Grande’s “Put Your Hands Up For Detroit” & Sander Kleinenberg’s “This Is Miami” can be heard often at many clubs in downtown Minneapolis."(http://www.djjoemaz.com/bio.php )

The Fetty Girlz with Discotech!!

With all of this said, it was no wonder that The Buzz has been anticipating this glorious moment for so long. In fact, in one of our first articles posted on The Buzz written by LP, we targeted Discotech as being powerhouse to reckon with and we predicted that they would become a force based on what we were hearing them post at The Vault (/imported-data/2007/9/3/new-djs-to-the-vault.html ). It is so amazing to see that this has come to pass and that Discotech is now a world-class mixing, producing and tourig DJ collaborative who istaking the nightclub scene by storm!!! It was definitely a Discotech "typhoon" that shook Aura to the core on Saturday night at their monthly Squeeze Party!!! It was a night of solid talent in all rooms with newcomer DJ Brandon Ray breakin' beats in the Blue Room under the close watch of vets Atimatik and Kyle Chase!

Atimatik Bangin' Out Hawt House!!

Warming everyone up in the Red Room was everybody's "soulman" DJ Shey Love crackin' out the heaters in the bull pen, as Discotech prepared to get all funk with the crowd!! When The Buzz arrived at the club, the groove was nicely in place and there was good crescendo vibe starting to build. By 11pm when Maz and Daze were due to switch out with Shey Love, the crowds were already starting to swarm around the decks! However, it wasn't the regular patron that was milling about the DJ Booth area, but rather industry people!!! The PR chain had apparently spread it's word like fire and through multiple channels. MANY people in the Bay Area and beyond affiliated with the club scene were lined up like teeny-boppers salivating at the thought of getting to ACTUALLY see Discotech live!! It was this interesting split between the musically-informed patron and club voyeurs that influenced the whole flow and feel of the night!!

Discotech's set rocked out of the gate from the get-go and they tended to lean more towards Old Skool Rock anthems with a definite AM-esque flare bringin' I Just Wanna Rock n' Roll (Jay Z/Jett Remix), Jessy's Girl, Toni Basil's Hey Mickey Rmx, one of their first Vault mixes Rock Star in Black, their Violent Femme's Blister In The Sun Rmx and they even threw in a little Johnny Cash for all of the wild cowboys out in the crowd (there were a few trust us)! Danny scratched and bobbed his head up and down, seducing the vinyl like it was a woman on fire! Ouch! While Joe was totally into every transition and the team quietly exchanged looks and signals between themselves about which song would follow and how the set would go down. As The Buzz has discovered with most DJ's, a pre-set order is usually the case. However, as we know with all artists, nothing is written in stone. According to Night Weekly Magazine, Daze stated that he produces on the go and quite often in the venues that he is working at. He is spontaneous and driven by his inner urge to create. This play was totally at work on Saturday and BOTH Daze and Maz felt at liberty to play with their mixes and integrate alternative and unorthodox music samples into their set. They even threw in a great voiceover, cut from The Borat Movie. It was about his sister being a prostitute and how she would work for money. This was the segue/transition into their Money remix. Brilliant and so atypical. That is what works about Discotech is that they are relaxed and always pushing their work harder, stronger and faster as the saying goes. At times, the music was perhaps a bit too sophisticated and fast for the crowd...it IS Pleasanton, not Miami...but these well-honed DJ's sensed the crowds needs and re-integrated a bit more Ghettofunk and Top 40/Hip Hop such as: Mr. Brightside, Drink In My 2 Step, Ayo, Good Life, The Way I Are, Never Gonna Get It, Brooklyn Blend, I Just Wanna G High....just to name a few, into the menu. However, not once did they drop their edge and no matter what the song they were playing, there was always a tweak or a spin to it that marked the mix as truly Discotech-nique!

We had settled ourselves right beside the DJ Booth for all of the time that we were in the Red Room and it was absolutely electric!! The play between the DJ's themselves and the club-goers created a vibe that intensified as the party continued to unfold. By the end of the evening swarms of people (many of them industry professionals), were hanging onto every transition and break , just as if it were Christmas morn and they couldn't wait to see what surprise would come next as "Santa Discotech" pulled heater after heater out of his giant sac of mash-up gems! Utter amazement glazed the faces of many and by the end of the night when 1:30 pm rolled around, no one seemed to want to stop the frenzy because the creativity had become raw. It felt like a jam session when instrumental artists sit around and just rock it out pure and unscripted!

David Savior, J.Espinosa (Wild 94.9 Radio) and Fabian of The Crooklyn Clan Vault, Deejay M Styles, Shey Love, Mix Master Miguel, Kyle Chase, Atimatik, and Brandon Ray all joined the onlookers and were totally delighted in the work of their colleague. It was so incredible to watch all of these DJ's come together from so many different backgrounds to unite in their appreciation of quality work. It was definitely one of those moments where words almost fall short of doing the experience justice. When Daze finally threw on Planet Soul's Set U Free, that was the indicator to Fetty Be that a true party was going down and we were in the middle of it!!! If you are EVER in a position to catch Discotech live, you absolutely MUST. We have seen quite a few world-class DJ's and this is one act that has blazed a trail across our musical souls. Discotech will render you speechless with amazement and blissfully exhausted by the end of your glorious magic carpet ride over the soundwaves together. Only regret for The Buzz? We didn't get to hear I Just Wanna A Whole Lotta Love, LP's favorite!!! Guess we gotta see Discotech AGAIN!! Whoohoo!!

Keeping it Discotech Baybay!!!
