DJ R-Cue Is An Artist Who Deeply Appreciates and Values His Roots And Professional Network

There are many reasons why we choose the career path that we we do in life. Often we are influenced by external sources that we aren't even aware of having a profound effect on shaping us and our interests. That is not the case with our next feature DJ, R-Cue. This man is acutely aware of where his roots are and who has impacted him in terms of his professional development as an artist.
DJ R-Cue With His Brother Renson And Their Lovely LadiesOriginally hailing from the Bay Area near San Francisco, R-Cue got his early beginnings in the industry as a result of seeing his older brother Renson spinning on the decks in the mid-nineties. As with any passion, it started small with R-Cue toying around with his brother's DJ equipment and in time the attraction became so strong that he acquired his own hardware in order to continue to feed his rapidly growing fascination. It was through his humble beginnings on a pair of Technic 1200's and a Gemini mixer, that would lead R-Cue down a path that would include mixing at local house parties, school dances, debutantes and private parties. Word of mouth and a strong connection with his older brother Renson's DJ network, helped R-Cue to continue to build a name for himself as an aspiring upcoming DJ in the community.
In 1996, R-Cue took his game to the next level with the formation of Xclusive Entertainment and it was alongside this group of close friends that R-Cue's DJ reputation exploded. With a solid base of performance experience under his belt, the next hurdle for R-Cue was to tackle the night life scene. It was in 1998 that not only did this artist graduate to the club world, but he also developed his skill set by mastering the ability to do three turntable mixing.
When it all boils down to what motivates R-Cue though, it's not the fame, money or power that keeps him behind the decks. The biggest reward for this artist is seeing "...the reaction on the crowd's faces and knowing that they are having a great time" and knowing that he "...did a great set." (R-Cue, Buzz Survey). Currently, R-Cue is now located in Los Angeles and it is here where he is quickly making his mark as a serious mash-up artist with a deep crate of traxs that include many of his own creations. 1994 embarked the year that Ron Mateo, a.k.a. R-Cue, made his presence within the music industry. Being a Bay Area resident (near San Francisco), R-Cue started with a pair of Technic 1200’s and a Gemini mixer. After taking an interest in making mixtapes and purchasing new vinyl, R-Cue realized that this particular hobby could become a way of earning extra funds on the side.
In 1996, Xclusive Entertainment was created with a band of loyal friends, mixing at house parties, debutantes, and school dances. This was a pastime that R-Cue felt would soon lead to more interest in creating a consistent flow within the music generation.
1998 was a year that R-Cue took the next step to mix at nightly venues as well as become affiliated with the use of three turntable mixing; it was also the year when Evolution DJ’s was founded.
Now being a Los Angeles resident, R-Cue has created a name for himself, taking the initiative to approach many nightclubs and promoters. Having the opportunity to mix at many of the prominent LA nightclubs and work with renowned promoters in Hollywood, he has vowed to be one of the top and well-respected DJ’s in California.
1. What inspired you to pick your DJ name?
The inspiration for coming up with my DJ name is basically the initial
of my name "Ron" and "Cue" meaning "on point"
2. What kind of music do you like to spin?
I enjoy playing whatever gets the crowd moving. I usually play top
40, hip hop, r&b, mashups, party breaks, classic rock, as well as
80's.
3. What & who are some of your major influences?
My main influence has to be my brother, Renson. If it wasn't for him
I wouldn't be where I am today and have all the knowledge and
experience that I do now. My crew members of "Evolution DJs" have
always been an inspiration in my life; EJ, Uncle Marc, Illtrax,
Soloist, RockyRock, and everyone else that played a part in my whole
DJ career.

4. Biggest reward about being a DJ?
The biggest reward would have to be the reaction on the crowd's faces
when I know they're having a great time and the feeling you get when
you know I did a great set. You feel like you're on cloud 9 and on
top of the world.
5. Biggest pet peeve about being a DJ?
The drive home after a long night.
6. What Is The Best Party You Have Ever Spun At?
All of them, you have to treat each one like it's the first time the crowd has ever heard you.
7. If you could mix at a club or party anywhere, where would it be &
with whom?
Las Vegas... The opportunity to spin at any of the venues in that
great city would be wonderful. Also, the chance to spin with all or
any of the "Crooklyn Clan" or "Crack 4 DJs" DJs would be a great
experience.
8. In what cities have you spun? Are you a resident DJ at any clubs
right now?
I've spun in cities such as: San Jose, San Francisco, Gilroy,
Berkeley, Los Angeles, Hollywood, Westlake, Santa Monica, Laughlin,
etc. I currently do not have any club residencies at this moment.
9. What is the hottest club you have ever been to either as a DJ or a
patron?
The hottest and nicest club would have to be V20 in Long Beach
10. Do you plan out your sets or do you play to the crowd's reactions?
Sometimes I plan my sets, but a lot of times I follow the energy of the crowd.
11. If you could design a club, name three important aspects of it's layout?
Attractive bar, huge DJ booth setup & grand laser & light show.
