Just a few weeks ago, we had the distinct pleasure of awarding the Buzz Mix Master title to DJ EX of Hype Artist Management (http://www.hypeartistmanagement.com/), as he was the grand prize winner of the Lady Gaga Rmx Poll. The poll had run for approximately 2 months and Ex put forth an outstanding battle, rallying all of his peers, associates and fans to vote for him. It was a slug fest between he and DJ Mike Larosa of The Dream Team DJ’s, but in the end DJ EX graciously won, claiming the 7th title as his own. He won for his amazing remix of Lady Gaga’s trax “Love Game”.

DJ EX is no stranger to competition and in fact he seems to thrive on it. He rises to challenges placed before him and as a result, you will learn that he is an opportunist who seeks to make constructive opportunities to better develop himself as an artist and as an entrepreneur. DJ EX in our opinion is a professional party DJ, who knows exactly HOW to read a crowd and exactly the right cutting edge traxs to drop to kick the vibe up into high gear right from the get-go! The fact that DJ EX climbed so quickly to the top is a flag indicating his true talent and ability to conjure a party mood from weaving traxs together in such a way as to keep the crowd jacked from start to finish! DJ Quixotic is his name and in his quest to evolve his inner talents, “Quix” or"Quix 95"as he now calls himself, has chosen to live a life adverse to the “typical” path of DJ career development. Quixotic is well known within the DJ community for his rich and prolific involvement within the DJ Battle scene from 2001-2004 with a crew called The Trooperz. He “is a Los Angeles based DJ/producer most notable in the Turntablist/Scratch DJ scene. He made a name for himself by being the first DJ from DC to win the Washington, DJ. Yet, despite his initial involvement in the competitive DJ battle scene, Quix has been working very hard ever since 2004 to move in the opposite direction of this world, to return to a place of pure and genuine appreciation of music without the extra fixings of social vanity. Quix has had a long-standing love affair with music and continues to remain deeply dedicated and committed to finding new traxs and artists who inspire his performance on the decks. You will often see him tweeting about new traxs that he has discovered on The Hype Machine Blog (http://hypem.com/track/877540), with intent purpose of flagging new music for his peers and friends. He doesn't share them for political reasons but simply because he feels the music.

THE BEATLES

During his foundation years, Quix was influenced by some incredibly powerful and revolutionary musical performers such as: the Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix, Mixmaster Mike, Swamp, The Misfits, and Q-bert to name a few. Throughout his career his colleagues such as his crew The Trooperz (Sneek, Enferno, Geometrix, Oz and I-Dee) have also encouraged Quix to continuously analyze and self-critique his personal growth in the industry. Over time, as his depth and mastery of the music intensified, so did his sense of purpose within his work.The word quixotic actually means, “unrealistically optimistic or chivalrous” (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/quixotic) Recently, Quix experienced a massive shift from being a champion of Scratching and Turntablism, to a more purist platform of being a champion of music consumption for pure pleasure and not narcissistic purposes. This artist seems to prefer his dance floor to be filled with down-to-earth, real people who come to the clubs to appreciate the music and not JUST to be seen in the latest fashion trends. Quix truly works hard to find less well-known traxs and enjoys dropping not necessarily what is trendy or popular in the mainstream music scene. It's the old quality versus quantity argument.

DON QUIXOTE (Artist Unknown)

He possesses a deep thirst for all that is pure and noble about the art of DJing and music creation. This artist takes his music very personally and manipulating sound is an act that he takes very seriously. Quix has even paralleled DJing to the medium and act of painting. Just recently he Tweeted “…on my way to @JustMatter's studio to throw some musical colors on the wall“. In keeping with some of the ideals of Pop Art used by Andy Warhol,(one of Quix’s favorite visual artists) extracting and mixing bits of various musical genre together to create new musical perspectives or "making sense out of madness"(Fetty Be’s Buzz Quix Buzz DJ Survey Answers Second Edit), is part of Quix’s practice!

"HELLO WORLD" QUIX VS ELLIOT

In his recent, JUST released, "Hello World" Quix vs Elliot traxs 1-7, he takes the listener on an eclectic sensorial journey through sound pairings that range in diversity and genre. He dares and even delights in producing music that is truly alternative to contemporary sounds. He urges the listener to question traditional styles of music that they consume without little thought, through his deliberate juxtaposition of genres. Quix forces us, including himself, to move out of our comfort zone with regards to music and to consider new, even radical sounding music. For example, just when you think you have a handle on one of his "Hello World" traxs, Quix (or Elliot) flips the bass or throws in a heavy vocal with a synthesizer effect... This is all done with the intention of providing his listeners with a "sensory sound garden" experience. The more that I have sampled Quix's work, the more I am reminded of the visual artist Salavdor Dali. This audiophile has overtones of Surrealism in his most recent creations. "Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for the visual artworks and writings of the group members.Surrealist works feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtaposition and non sequitur; however, many Surrealist artists and writers regard their work as an expression of the philosophical movement first and foremost, with the works being an artifact. SALVADOR DALI AND SURREALISM

Quix, in his new found quest to be more pure and genuine with his use of music, truly possesses some of the attributes of the Surrealist arts movement. The choice to step outside of the mainstream box and question assumptions about current musical genres and definitions, puts Quix in a pioneer realm in our opinion. He is pushing the envelope with regards to his music production and this is not an easy undertaking, to go against the grain. The fact that he has "proven" his technical ability and knowledge to his colleagues, is certainly facilitating the choice to move in an alternative direction. Subsequently, he is facing less scrutiny due to his industry credibility. However, there are those who will fight the move to change and continue to preserve the limitations of the status quo, and criticize his efforts.

QUIX

Quix chooses to rise above these limitations and to see the "roots of music", rather than be distracted by the flower. He has taken the industry blinders off and has freed himself to experiment with music and sound, in his quest for more expansive means of self-expression. We are definitely going to be keeping a close eye on the evolution of Quix and his continuous efforts to evolve his personal style. It appears, in looking at historical precedents in all of the arts, that the individuals who choose to question and continue to re-evalutate their medium, are those who truly define and write history in the end.Please take a moment to check out the Wiki profile of Quix. ANDY WARHOL

Andy Warhol’s quote truly parallels with the paradigm shift in thinking that Quix has experienced in his career evolution, “Once you 'got' Pop, you could never see a sign again the same way again. And once you thought Pop, you could never see America the same way again.“ (Andy Warhol) Quix sees the music industry through his years of deep immersion, which in turn has gifted him with the insight and the ability to clearly establish his life and QUESTION his career priorities.

QUIX FROM A WIKKIPEDIA PERSPECTIVE!

Quix (often referred to as DJ Quixotic) - is a Los Angeles based DJ/producer most notable in the turntablist/scratch dj scene. He made a name for himself by being the first DJ from DC to win the Washington, D.C. Regional Championships and thus representing the city in the 2001 United States DJ Championships. He later placed Top 4 in the nation at the 2004 USA Championships by manipulating and scratching records by Queen and Jimi Hendrix. He qualified that year by being the first east coast DJ to be crowned the Los Angeles Champion.

Quix is also known for his live sets and performances where he scratches rock with hip hop and is known to "cover" the Tracy Chapman song "Fast Car" using a test-tone record and manipulating the speed of the platter to create the notes.

Worked with Lauryn Hill as a producer in the summer of 2006.

As a DJ he mainly mixes, scratches and fuses Hip Hop with all forms of genres including (but not limited to) rock, soul, punk, reggae, house, techno, and drum and bass. As a producer/artist, his work focuses on synth based sounds with added live scratching favoring the use of computer based software Propellerhead's Reason and Ableton Live.

He belongs to a collective of turntablists named The Trooperz.

Hard call – there’s been many – most recently I had a lot of fun spinning at an Electro/Bmore/Drum ‘n Bass party in Wash DC.

It would probably be a backyard barbecue with a bunch of friends. That’s what I love about LA. Everyone loves eating, drinking, and live music all rolled into one. And the weather always permits it here.

8. In what cities have you spun? Are you a resident DJ at any clubs right now?

I’ve been to NY, DC, Miami New Orleans and many others --– my goal is to spin at as many different cities as I can for the time being. Not a big fan of residencies at the moment, I like being able to rock for different crowds.

I love going to hole in the wall spots like The Room– I’m also a big fan of a party called Quality which my homie Mason holds down with DJ Haul every Saturday at Zanzibar in Santa Monica. Its been going 5 years strong. I also absolutely love going to The Do-Over party in Hollywood on Sundays. Although now its damn near impossible to get in if you don’t get there before 4pm.

10. Do you plan out your sets or do you play to the crowd's reactions?

I used to plan them, not anymore. I trust my instinct now and ability to tap into the vibe of the room. I always rehearse my remixes and I always get on the tables to feel out tracks and timing and scratch breaks. If I'm doing a showcase or actual performance, then yes, I practice till I'm sore.

1) The sole attention should be on the DJ

2) Projection screens everywhere (I'd have it be 70’s glam imagery or 80’s pictures of bar mitzvah DJ’s)

3) And the most important, the people coming in have to have their own sense of style (I hate seeing the whole crowd wearing the same name brand clothes)

 “Z-Trip is one of the biggest DJs of our time, doing over 100 shows a year, every year. Considered by many to be a founder of the mash-up movement, his musical tastes are eclectic and his mixing style rejects simple classification. His early independent releases have become highly sought after collectibles. Uneasy Listening, the collaboration with DJ P, was one of the first of its kind, and has sold for as much as $500 on eBay.

No other DJ can claim playing to 500,000 people opening for the Rolling Stones at Sars-stock in Toronto, playing the Bonaroo main stage to over 70,000 people 2 years in a row in addition to headlining a tent at Coachella twice.  CONGRATS WITH LUV FROM THE BUZZ Z-TRIP!!!!

To all of our readers, DJ NeVoc was due to be featured on The Buzz later this Fall before he left for his tour of duty in Iraq. Sadly we won't be writing that DJ Buzz Survey feature for him, but rather we are writing a final Buzz Tribute with the help of NeV's friends, family and colleagues... It is our intention to celebrate DJ NeVoc's brief, but highly successful and prolific career in the music industry as a DJ, remixer, Club Manager, Resident DJ, soldier, husband, brother and son.

As with all remixes, there's a beginning and an end to the song. So too is it in life...In this case, the life of Alex Gilchrist, "DJ NeVoc" aka NeV, ended far too early and we are all in shock that the music of NeV's life came to such an abrupt halt. Yet, as we have learned through his remixing passion and enthusiasm for piecing songs together, completing NeV's mix has been entrusted into our collective hands. He has left it up to all of us to finish the song that he started many moons ago, by coming together to celebrate his life and his deep love of music. Kerri, his beautiful wife, had this to say of NeV's level of commitment to his creative work: "Talking about his passion for music would be great. You can say that every free second he had, he was hard at work. That was truly his happy place and escape. (That is actually where we met...It was one night at his club in Enterprise)."

Being connected with music appears to have been how NeV navigated throughout the course of his life and even when faced with another tour of duty over in Iraq with his military career, he still planned to keep on mixing his music...even on the front lines. Here is his last MySpace Blog where he reflects on that aspect of his life: " Hey Everyone, Just thought I’d hit up the Blog... As of right now I am 15 of the 54 DJs on Crack4djs.net and I owe that to you! Thanks for all the support over the last couple months. Your sales allow me to keep doing what I'm doing. Yes, the rumor is true. I am going to Iraq for 15 months toward the end of the year... Worry not, the remixes won't stop! Maybe not 7 remixes a week like I have been putting out, but for sure I’ll be banging them out!!! Also, just to keep you informed on new things, I have a new CD in the works so keep an Eye on the MySpace. I’m also going to be releasing (Rewind) CDs via Bulletins from back in the day, before I got into Mash-ups, etc. Thanks Again For All The Support! Till next time! Pz NeV"

Since 2000, NeV has been messing with the decks and working hard to continuously develop his mixing skills and better improve his final products for us all to enjoy. For NeV, it wasn't about the quantity, although he was very prolific on Crack4DJ's and he leaves behind over 115 remixes! Rather, he took pride in ensuring that his completed music had been well-executed with the skill set that he had at the time. In the brief period that I did know this artist, he was constantly bouncing music off of his peers, his family and friends in order to gather feedback on how his creations sounded. NeV definitely had a sense of humor and he described "his sound as this: DJ NeVoc = Kind of a mix of Vice, Danny Diggz, DJ Serafin, and DJ JD blended into a bomb ass Margarita!". Speaking of Margarita's, it was THIS very remix Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet, that was NeV's ALL-TIME MOVER on Crack4DJ's. Be sure to listen to it on our Buzz player! As we have noted, he was a mature artist who was always open to constructive criticism, and in fact welcomed the opportunity to step-up his game so that in the end he could relish in watching others enjoy the fruits of his effort. His comments and descriptions on Crack4DJ's really capture his enthusiasm, humour and occasional surprise at what came "out of the oven", when all was said and done. NeV did his homework and throughout his remixing career, reached out to many other DJ's in the industry, in order to learn and gain greater knowledge of where he could grow.

DJ Doc Roc

DJ Doc Roc out of Florida is one of those individuals who NeV noted as being a huge influence in his music education. Doc Roc acted as a mentor to NeV in his early days as a DJ and it was through this connection that NeV was able to spin at Doc's resident club, Club La Vela in Florida! There have been many other artists that have been helpful to NeV along the way and he made it a point to reach out to these brothers and sisters of the decks, to do gigs or collaborate on remixes. It was just this sort of venture that NeV was undertaking, a joint remix together with DJ JD, that NeV was involved in right up to very end of his life. Hours before he passed, NeV texted 3 remix ideas to JD...which again is a testimony to how deeply his life was intertwined with his passion. He truly nourished his artistic spirit through fully integrating himself into rhythm, drum, beats, BPMs, cue backs, acapellas, Serato, Ableton, Gateway, vinyl etc...He even wore his love of music on his body through sporting the most amazing DJ and industry-related tattoos. Music infiltrated all aspects of NeV's life and being. From the early days of doing RAVE gigs in the underground club scene, to helping to build, hold a residency at and manage one of the most successful nightclubs in South Alabama, "Club Discothek", NeV was always pushing forth his music career. Nev even met his sweetheart and wife Kerri at Club Discothek...music completed NeV's life.

The author and doctor Gary Chapman, brought the globe's attention in 1992 to how people speak different "love languages" in his world-renowned book, "The Five Love Languages".In getting to know DJ NeVoc more closely through writing this tribute, it appears that it was through music that NeV spoke most clearly and was able to communicate most effectively. His remixes are truly extensions of himself, as through the process of creating each mix, the music filtered through his very inner-self and as a result of this internalization...the legacy of music that he has left for us has been his way of leaving part of his spirit here with us. It's forever here to help us feel connected to him and also for him to live on as a testimony to his brilliant and creative musical soul. Thank you NeV for the gift of your passion for music and for allowing us the privilege of knowing you and being a part of the unique rhythms and beats of your life. We will all do our best to finish your song and make this your best remix EVER.

A MESSAGE FROM DJ JD...ON BEHALF OF THE DJ COMMUNITY

It’s amazing what this online community of DJ’s has become. It is truly remarkable the response Alex’s family has received from people who never actually met him, like myself. Like most DJ’s we know from the forums or through remix sites, we never actually get to meet face-to-face, but we have formed a tightly knit community that respects and helps their fellow DJ. I have to say I am glad to be a part of this community.

Nevoc and I were supposed to meet many times. In fact he had talked about coming out during the week prior to his death. He only lived in New York, myself in Connecticut, and it was a 4 - 5 hour drive. For some reason we always missed each other in our travels. Even though we never met, I can tell you from the times we talked about life and music, that he was without a doubt a genuinely nice guy. Sometimes you can just tell and he was one of those people. He was always thinking about other people, constantly coming up with new ideas like TTM 57 Faceplates and Crack4DJs gear. He was full of ideas.

Nevoc first reached out to me last year looking for advice on how to expand his DJ network and get his remixes on the sites. He was always looking to better himself and I was happy to help him. He was quickly picked up on Your Remix and soon after on Crack4DJs. His early remixes were always good and you could see his creativity poking through, but they were all done live on Serato, the way most of us started. He told me he really liked what Serafin and I were doing with our B-more tracks and asked how we did it. I immediately told him about Ableton and all it had to offer. I remember he got it a few days later and I gave him his first Ableton tutorial over an AIM audio chat. His mixes were never the same after that! You could see the difference, like night and day. That’s also when he discovered his unique stutter that brands all his tracks. He was always one to remix the tracks the rest of us forgot about. All those late 90’s jams from my high school years that were always in the back of my mind… he did em! Thank you for that Nev!

I last talked to him while I was in his home state of Iowa, texting him after receiving his email sent to the Crack crew. The email he sent is haunting in retrospect. It foresaw what was to come, but it was not entirely obvious what we were seeing, and I’m sure we could not have done anything even if we had known. I was, like most, surprised by his email. We were in the process of collaborating on a remix of “Forever” by Chris Brown and had talked the day before he sent the message. I was supposed to send him the audio files so he could put his touch on the track, but was unable to before I left for Iowa. He had asked me to help him make an Electro mix with him. I had just finished playing and recording the Electro lines which he unfortunately only heard over the phone. I have since finished this remix, doing my best to add the flavor only Nevoc could add. I think he foresaw me doing this after he left us. I say this because while we were texting back and forth on Friday, he sent me a tutorial on exactly how he did his signature stutter effect. He broke it down beat-by-beat, telling me exactly which beats to skip and which ones to stutter. I’m glad he did and I hope you can hear his vision on the remix.

I know music was Alex’s passion. He may have done many other things, but he loved to DJ and make mixes other DJ’s love to play. I know this because just hours before he passed, while I was sleeping, he texted me 3 more ideas for remixes he knew he wouldn’t be able to do. I am trying them out and the ones that work I will have posted on Crack4DJs under his name.

DJ NEVOC'S BIO

DJ Nevoc started DJing back in 2000. He began playing in the local Raves in Iowa's underground dance scene before getting his first residency in a local disco called Club Ibiza, Des Moines, Iowa. He played there for about a year before his other career forced him to leave Iowa. He ended up traveling the U.S. and World going to Columbus, GA, Fayetteville, NC, Afghanistan, and Iraq. He returned stateside back in mid 2004 and kept playing. Eventually he ended up in Dothan, Alabama in 2005.

His greatest accomplishment was building & opening the hottest Night Club in South Alabama, "CLUB DISCOTHEK!! He has been the head DJ and Manager for Club Discothek since they opened in Early 2006. He now focuses most of his time on remixes and cutting commercials, but still loves to rock out the club.

DJ Nevoc has played Spring Break on the beach @ America's Largest Night club. CLUB LA VELA! He has been mentored (So to Speak) by one of the greatest DJ's in America in his opinion, DJ Doc Roc. Doc Roc has been on the forefront of Breakbeats, and has schooled him countless times on how to improve himself.

In times when we are super-saturated with the mundane and over-played in all aspects of culture, it’s so refreshing to encounter the extraordinary! The media in all its forms has mastered the art of over-exposure. Consequently, it has fostered a generation of de-sensitized consumers AND producers. Even in the nightclub industry this is a prevalent problem. DJ Z-Trip expressed his frustration recently on Twitter in a comment about an extremely generic DJ set he witnessed: “Seriously, what the hell happened out there people? Weren't DJ's supposed 2 take chances? We have the power! SO MANY SHEEP, so few superheros” (cited from: DJ Z-Trip Twitter http://twitter.com/ztrip ,06-18-09) The masses devour their super size fries barely tasting the salt, subsequently revealing the sad reality that quantity has now replaced quality in so many areas of society. Yet, in the midst of the bland and boring…now again originality struggles to the surface.

Spice and flavor jolts our taste buds back to life, giving us a glimpse of the beauty that quality has to offer in the midst of gross neutrality and volume. This is exactly the mission that our next Buzz feature DJ crew, The Disco Fries, has set for themselves. If you have ever been to New Jersey or to Quebec, Canada, you may already understand why these artists see themselves as above the norm and common place. The name Disco Fries is a term that, “ Originated in Canada (Poutine in Fr.) but was perfected in New Jersey. It’s a combination of brown gravy, mozzarella cheese and HOT crispy steak fries. It is the perfect end to a late night of binge drinking. Some of the best places to get them in NJ are Six Brothers or Tick Tock, but occasionally some random spot'll have em too. DJ Piklz & Danny Danger of The Disco Fries

The Disco Fries consist of a duo crew of DJ’s who collaborated in late 2007 and is comprised of DJ Piklz (Nicholas Ditri) and Danny Danger. As you will learn, these artists collectively bring a wealth of musical experience, education, and background to their current producer/remixer status. Piklz began his training at the very young age of 7 when his grandparents started him playing the piano. With exposure to the classics and traditional training as his backbone, by the age of 12 Piklz, was deeply involved with music to the point where the ability to DJ was like second nature to him. He took to it immediately and was soon being sought after for gigs. Danger & Piklz have been deeply involved with the industry for well over 10-15 years and each brought a wealth of personal musical experience to their collaboration. 1. What inspired you to pick your DJ your name?

Blue Swan diner in Jersey. We met up there one summer for some food and ordered some disco fries. Stuff is interesting....

2. What kind of music do you like to spin?

Electro, House, Bmore, Hip Hop

3. What and who are some of your major influences (artists, djs, etc.)?

Too many! As producers definitely Laidback Luke, Deadmau5, Klaas, Adam K, and David Guetta to name a few. Benassi was really good live and any of the Crooklyn Clan/Crack4DJs guys always rock it.

4. Biggest reward about being a Producer?

Seeing people's reactions to our tracks. That's what it's all about. Knowing that you made someone else's night better because of something you worked hard on.

5. Biggest pet peeve about being a DJ?

Hard to say. Up to this point, Nick is the only one that DJ's really and I only produce. I think the usual...obnoxious requests, mobile gigs that run long, etc.

6. What is the best party you have ever spun at?

Summer party at the Ditri's (DJ Piklz). Every summer. Well worth a trip.

Nick's got a couple spots in NJ, but I can't remember where. We're hoping to get the live thing going more now that we've built a name for ourselves on the production end.

9. What is the hottest club you have ever been to, either as a DJ or a patron?

Our first year at WMC had some memorable spots (Mansion and Automatic Slim's were nuts) and the Estate in Boston was good too.

I think you always gotta play off the crowd's reactions. A general idea of what you're trying to accomplish is important too but being spontaneous is always a good thing.

Hmm what makes a good spot? Sound system first and foremost I would think. We're there to have a good time, but if you're listening to speakers that are pushed to the limit all night its gonna get old. I guess that's all I got.

Within his 32 years of living and growing up as a child in Lewiston, Maine, Joe made the first of many big life jumps, when he RADICALLY altered the course of his life impulsively choosing to pursue a career that he had no training for at a local radio station (WKZS 99.9). Well, Joe didn't maintain that beginner status for long and through much diligence and self-instruction, he worked up through the various roles at the station. Both producers hooked up with the brand new American Idol "Simon Cowell approved" L.A. artist Jessica Jarrell, who his ONLY 15. Armageddon is her debut track and we feel that it is a perfect example of JUST how talented Joe is. The original song is gospel-inspired according to Davis Ballard of In The Know PR. He also describes the gem as having mainstream appeal due to its, " dynamic beat and ear appealing string section which lends itself perfectly to any dance music aficionado's taste!" My DJ name is my real name. I have always liked my name and didn’t want something silly like DJ Squirrel Biscuit.

I like music with energy. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s electro, progressive, ect. As long as it rocks the house I will work it into my set.

There are so many good ones that it’s tough to narrow it down. Two that really stand out are New Year’s Day at Arq in Sydney and my birthday party at Living Room in Mexico City.

7) If you could mix at a club or a party anywhere, where would it be and with whom?

I would love to play at Creamfields. They always have such a good line up that it would be an honor to play alongside any of them.

8) In what cities have you spun? Are you a resident DJ at any clubs right now?

That’s a pretty long list. It might be easier to list the ones I haven’t played in yet. I travel so much that it’s hard to, but I do have regular stops in Boston, LA, etc.

Tryst Nightclub in Vegas is pretty pimp. They have a 150 foot waterfall in the middle of the club. It’s not often you see that while you’re dancing.

I always have certain records that I can’t wait to play, but it all depends on the crowd. Their energy dictates where the night goes.

It is critical to us at the Buzz to focus on DJ's at all levels of expertise, skill, years of experience, genre preference and global exposure. For many, the strong pull to music becomes so overwhelming that it becomes a vehicle with which these individuals use to express their inner emotions and to connect socially with others. The intensity of Mike's style you will note, is of key interest and focus to us. One of his close friends bestowed him with the name Mad Mix Mike because his intensity towards his work could almost be deemed borderline obsessive and insane! He has an acute ability to beat match and as a result can quickly overlay tracks and edit on the fly! He pairs all genres of music including utilizing vocal tracks from other sources of media besides music, (i.e. Comedy, TV, Movies). DJ Mad Mix Mike was introduced to House music in 1999. He developed it into his own genre of Electro House. Chicago native Mike envied some of the great mix masters such as Bad Boy Bill, Julian Jumpin Perez, and the Hot Mix 5.

At just the young age of 15, Mike was developing into a DJ who could really rock the party. He was voted 2002 NW Indiana and Chicagoland DJ of the month. 1. What inspired you to pick your DJ your name?

A great story….. but long story short, I was prepping for a set at a local venue in Chicago. I was downstairs in my friends basement practicing a mix and I couldn't get on tempo. I was getting mad at the turntable because the needle was skipping. I gave up after failed attempts and later on at the gig made a snarled facial expression when I was mixing that record. My friend came up to me and said “that mix was mad!”. Needless to say I nailed it and had a great set! That’s where the name Mad Mix Mike came into play.

2. What kind of music do you like to spin?

I like to spin everything, I have a love for all genres of House music. Right now I am spinning mainly Electro and Progressive House in Phoenix (my favorite).

Keeping the beat INSANELY HAWT WITH MAD MIX MIKE!

It's ONLY fitting that I am able to complete this Part II portion of Michael Toast's Buzz feature ... AT AT AT NIGHT!!! Michael Toast is an artist who has captured our intrigue on many levels and the creature that evolves as the sun sets is the one that we would like to better understand through this final analysis. We first featured Michael on the Buzz last year in our Part I portion, where we identified his unique trademark performance attributes and labeled Toast as a pioneer in the art of DJ Performance Artistry.

Just to jog memories performance artistry is defined: "In performance art, usually one or more people perform in front of an audience. In contrast to the traditional performing arts, performance art is unconventional. Performance artists often challenge the audience to think in new and unconventional ways about theater and performing, break conventions of traditional performing arts, and break down conventional ideas about "what art is," similar to the postmodern art movement. Thus, even though in most cases the performance is in front of an audience, in some cases, the audience becomes the performers. The performance may be scripted, unscripted, or improvisational. It may incorporate music, dance, song, or complete silence. Michael In His Element!

Since that initial contact with Michael, we have since had the privilege of attending several of his gigs this past year in Sacramento (Tantra) and in San Francisco (Infusion). Through viewing Toast in a variety of different settings, venues and contexts, it has given us a greater depth to our perspective of this innovative force. We have featured MANY artists now on The Buzz and taking that credibility into account, it is with ease that we flag Michael as an anomaly. There doesn't appear to be a huge faction of artists within the DJ community who involve themselves so completely in the performance that they offer to the club or venue setting. With Michael it's different. He expresses his whole body in response to the music as he interfaces with it, which then results in more performance-based gigs, where Michael is as much a part of the music, as the music is part of Michael. If you've come to hear the music and dance, then you've come to see Michael's soul as it literally pours forth on to the decks and into the crowd. Most DJ's feel the music internally, but again that is where Michael is left of center.

He wears his emotions outwardly and as part of getting the motivation that he needs to continue creating the party vibe, he exudes massive volumes of excitement, engages in air-guitar simulation, lip-syncs to the lyrics of a favorite song, hops up on the DJ booth to give a rock star inspired shout out...or stage dives to conjure RAVE days gone by! Just recently we witnessed all of this behavior from MT at Infusion night club and it is for these performance rituals that he is sought after by club owners and promoters. Michael possesses such a deep passion for his artwork that it spills forth almost every time he interfaces musically with crowds of people.

Jackin' The Crowd In Hollywood With Ease!

We have often heard now of DJ's referring to that magical circle of energy or vibe that is created when the DJ or artist is emanating emotion and then the club-goers reciprocate that energy back...I coin it "the mirror effect". It's a perfect moment when an adrenaline high can be attained just because a flow of energy is moving between two points of origin. Michael's innate DJ Performance Artistry naturally inclines him to achieve these intense performance highs more frequently, as the crowds feed off of the emotion that is exuded by the DJ. It's exciting to watch an artist become animated over his/her work and that is why Michael is so successful. He is also based out of Vegas, which is a city of extremes and suits well with Toast's performance style and personality. Vegas showcases the unique and larger-than-life persona's!

Not every DJ could get away with making a grandiose entry into a gig wearing a straight jacket, simulating insanity and being accompanied by two super hawt naughty nurses as Michael did last year at Aura, CA. Although the patrons were somewhat stunned by Toast and perhaps the stunt was a bit extreme for the Bay Area, Michael's drive to be original in his artwork and perception has been genuinely life long.With a 70's inspired punk Mohawk hairstyle and charcoal eyeliner etched onto his current skin, the DJ known as MT comes out to play hardcore at night adorned with his performance alter ego.

This ritualistic behavior may have even be instilled within Michael when he was a child, because he notes: "When I was 11 in NYC, I would run away from home to dance in front of the ROXY in Manhattan. That's where I earned my name "toast" from the Rastafarian's who sold weed out front because when you dance, DJ , or MC your TOASTING the music!! With such a profound and lengthy connection with music, it's almost reminiscent of the Roman Legend of the two human infants Romulus and Remus, who were suckled by a she-wolf...In this case, Michael has suckled from the She-Wolf that is music and he is now her "prophet". 1. What inspired you to pick your DJ your name?

When I was 11 in NYC, I would run away from home to dance in front of the ROXY in Manhattan. That's where I earned my name "toast" from the rastafarians who sold weed out front because when you dance, dj , or MC your TOASTING the music!! It's a celebration bitches!! The name stuck.

2. What kind of music do you like to spin?

Music is my wife first and foremost and I'm so in love with her. I play the right music for the right time, but I've been pushing my Electro House and Bmore Mash-ups these days. People should expect the unexpected without being disappointed. My style is not jukebox. It's more block party. I try not to play too fast and jerk off on my crowd. Who wants to hear a guitarist solo all night? Not me. Play the tune already!

3. What and who are some of your major influences (artists, djs, etc.)?

Music is a reflection of life in general, but mostly the music from my parents influenced me the most. MOM taught me about the importance of words and song structure through the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Santana, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Al Green ,50's and 60's Bubble Gum Rock and Doo Wop... DAD taught me about the Blues and Soul, thru Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, ten years after, Curtis Mayfield, The Doors, Led Zep, Johnny Cash, Marshall Tucker, Grand Funk Railroad, AC/DC and Black "mother fucking" Sabbath.

The connection shared between artist and audience....The energy has started stalled cars..I've seen it.

I don't like being lumped into one style....If I was playing a guitar, I could play anything I wanted to without people passing judgment on the genre of music that I was playing..I would just be judged on my style as a guitar player. I wish nightlife had the same view. However, either way you slice it, Djing at night will always trump a day job!! I'm so blessed to make a living this way.

6. What is the best party you have ever spun at?

Coined in Swedish in the form dynamit, the word was taken from Greek word dunamis meaning “power”. It has been used to imply exceptionally wonderful and exciting sentiments, as well as inferring danger. Our next DJ appears to exude all of these characteristics when he works his magic on the decks! DJ Dynamite, who currently hails from New Jersey and was born and raised in Jamaica until he was 5 yrs. old, is an artist who has convinced us that he knows the industry like the back of his hand.

He has explored the different roles within the DJ industry and enjoyed being associated with various remix houses for a while. However, being a purist and a "true blue BBoy" at heart, he has brought his mad, life-long passion for music full circle. At the end of the day, Dynamite derives the greatest satisfaction and joy from spinning for HIS regular club "family" network in Jersey. Consequently, what this artist has learned about himself on this journey of musical self-discovery is that "seeing everybody on the dance floor having a good time and seeing them leave at the end of the night all sweaty from dancing all night." is what's most important for Dynamite in order to feel his work is successful. He also knows that he has honed his ability to read a crowd based on their dynamics and adjust his set accordingly AND on the fly! This adaptability is truly indicative of an artist that is confident in his own abilities and in working the music in such a way, he is able to masterfully mold to the set to suite the temperature of the crowd. It seems critical to reinforce an important aspect about DJ Dynamite's personality that has stood out for us throughout our interaction with him during this exclusive Buzz Survey interview process. Having been in the industry over 20 years, this is a man who's been there and done that. When asked what was his most memorable event that he has spun at, his answer wasn't a self-inflating egotistical response. He's got a fun personality with a clever sense of humor that he enjoys sharing with his listeners during the more social moments of a gig. 1. What inspired you to pick your DJ name?

It was kind of a spur of the moment thing. I wanted something that pretty much explained my style but also had a nice ring to it. My first name starts with D so for a few years I was known as DJ Dynamite D. After a while I just dropped the "D" and now I'm just "Dynamite".

2. What kind of music do you like to spin?

My music selection really represents my personality. I'm a very open-minded person so I tend to reach across all musical genres. I like to spin a little bit of everything. I also like to throw in those "OH SHIT" tracks. You know the ones where you "Oh Shit, I know he didn't just play that? That's my joint, I haven't heard that song in years!"

3. What and who are some of your major influences (artists, DJ's, etc.)

I would have to say that my major influences are DJ Jazzy Jeff, Red Alert, Riz, Sizzahandz, Marley Marl, Tony Humphries, Todd Terry, Armand Van Helden and Funkmaster Flex (the old school back in the 90's version when he used to actually DJ...lol). I'm also influenced by people that I come in contact with everyday and all my fans and fellow DJ's that give me compliments and criticism on my DJ sets and remixes.

I'd have to say it was a house party I did back in '96. Nothing beats the raw energy of a house party!!

Damn, that's a tough one. It seems like alot of clubs nowadays don't really pay attention to detail anymore. They're just concerned with bar sales and have no real atmosphere.
