Graffiti art has long been an integral part of the street culture and this art form was also influential in the birth of the Hip-Hop movement. Many DJs actually possess experience in Graffiti art expression. Graffiti is now a mainstream form of artwork and extends its reach deep into all aspects of culture. In memoriam to the late Sigi Von Koeding a.k.a. DARE (The Wild Side), September 16th 1968 - March 6th 2010
,we take a moment to pay our respects. “A beloved friend and one of the world`s most influential Graffiti artist outside NYC died last week...We lost our friend to cancer last Friday in Basel, Switzerland (Fetty Be lived there…). Our sympathies goes to his family, friends and crewmembers (Toast, Dream, Pose2, Kesy and many others)...” DJ ACE OF www.djace.com

Website:

To live is to express….take a moment to savor this amazing artist’s talent.

Xtranormal Style DJ Vs Promoter!!!
With the doors just about to officially re-open on Friday March 12, 2010 under a new name, Venue Nightclub, (formerly Empire Event Center), this establishment has attempted to set a new standard of style for greater upscale night life in Sacramento. In 2004 “Randy Paragary, Bob Simpson, and Rick and Earl Lobley opened the Empire Event Center. It was almost alone on the R Street Corridor for four years, before being joined by, among others, Shady Lady Saloon, Magpie Catering, Burgers and Brew, Space 07 Salon and Top This Yogurt. With all of these businesses opening in the past year, it was time for the space to undergo a facelift - to the tune of $2 million.” (cited from: http://www.sacramentopress.com/headline/22143/A_Venue_for_all_occasions) Considering the “type” of businesses flanking Empire, it’s not hard to see why it soon became a haven for the underage, college crowd to congregate. In an attempt to alter it’s image as a hangout joint, the current owners ventured into the Venue project “with an entrepreneurial spirit. The young but savvy club runners from Las Vegas & Miami have done a $2 million dollar remodel including design, lights and sound, making Venue the place to be. Featuring artwork from Sacramento born and Los Angeles based artist Jacob Patterson.

VENUE GIRLS!

Conceptually “Punk Rock Meets Victoria’s Secret,” the space of the club swings with vintage ornamental designs, gorgeous women, paint drips and touches of the punk rock scene. The feel never conflicts and is warmly welcoming, providing an energized ambience that is the definition of ‘hip.’ The vision, Patterson says, is the expression of a single girl, enjoying a night on the town. From the stencil art hanging above the club entrance, to vintage Damask patterns spread across the bars, to the VENUE Girl series hanging above the VIP booths, everything is an expression of beauty and excitement. Expressed multiple times over, the VENUE Girl depicts not so much portraiture as an expression of style and form. It is readily apparent that an emotion was present in the design of this nightclub, and it was surely a sensual one.” Cited from: http://sacvenue.com/about1.php There will be no more student nights based on what we are hearing and they are claiming.

The club has held several functions aka “soft openings” prior to the official grand opening. It was at one of these events that The Buzz had an opportunity to savor a night out at Venue and get a feel for this new hawt spot in Sacramento. It was actually a two-fold night for us in terms of accomplishments. We not only got to experience a new venue literally to review, but we were also privy to a first for The Buzz. We got to accompany a DJ on his first club gig and experience what it was like to face this massive and intimidating milestone in a blossoming DJ career. Scottobahn, who was the winner of the Groove Cruise DJ Contest, helped to bring the renowned JJ Flores to Sacramento for his first official appearance in Sac and in the process landed himself an opening spot as a result of his networking!

JJ Flores and Scottobahn

When we arrived at the club, we were pleasantly surprised to find a big parking structure located close by and within walking distance. The club is located in the R street district in Sacramento and is surrounded by several pub-like establishments that had people gathered out front of them, drinking and chatting in designated outdoor seating. We immediately spotted Venue, as there were doormen all dressed in black standing at the door talking with a small line-up of people. We weren’t sure what to expect in terms of line-ups, so it was a pleasant surprise to find the line short. We arrived early around 10:30pm, so the night club was just starting to get things rolling. We were admitted with no difficulty ,but did have to enter into the space to then stand in another check-in line. At this point, three girls in a coatroom did their best to cross our names off of a guest-list and take our coat without falling over each other. There seemed to be a little confusion with guests entering, as some patrons thought that once inside, they could proceed straight into the club space. Again this night was part of their soft opening, so some confusion was to be expected. The managers quickly got the misguided patrons organized and sent to the correct line-up.

Once inside, we immediately took in the decor and started savoring the ambience at the bar. I was instantly impressed with how the club employees were dressed. The girls were all dressed in black, had stylish coiffures and moved around the club greeting patrons and ensuring everyone in VIP were taken care of. There was definitely an “essence” of Vegas within Venue. I was rather hoping for a strict dress code, but one didn’t appear to be in effect. Which in my opinion draws a rough crowd. I hope, despite the pressure of a bad economy, that they consider bringing one into visible effect!

VEGAS-STYLE VENUE VIP SERVICE!

Not having seen what Venue looked like during it’s Empire Center days, I write this review based on my reaction to it’s current state without a comparison. I liked the chandeliers that hung all around club. They were a little on the small side, but in clusters they accomplished the glam effect that the designers appeared to be aiming for. The black & red color scheme always lends itself with ease to any club space. The vinyl leatherette benches gave the space a classy, but functional look. I was thrilled to discover the size of the dance floor space. Quite often clubs and lounges that open now have such small dance areas, as the owners like to cram in as many VIP tables as possible, so that bottles can be sold and more money can be made. There are 3 VIP areas in the club with bottle service available. As for the decor, mirrors were used behind the bar to help enhance both the glamour and feeling of space within the club. The name Venue was made very visible on and around the main bar area with 2 massive signs.

The bottles of alcohol were on display and lit up behind the bar in typical club fashion and the main bar was good and long. The walls were all painted black and spilled into the ceiling which was all open with duct work and pipes exposed. The design is truly a study in contrasts in my opinion. The space has an industrial feel, yet with splashes or retro glamour through the use of fabrics, textiles, lighting, gold paint, mirrors, glass etc. There is even a “speak easy” underground edge to the whole space. The lighting is rather dark I found, but dramatic. The floor is unfinished concrete which I thought gave the club a shabbiness. I think that they could have at least acid stain-washed the floor to improve it’s warehouse feeling. It’s an inexpensive solution to the floor issue. There’s shabby-chic and then there’s just plan unfinished. A stage in the main room is the focal point, with another smaller space in the back for a different genre of music to be dropped.

JJ Flores

There is a DJ turntable cart up on the main stage, which is movable so that live bands can also perform in the space. A plan that the current owners wish to see to fruition. The hopes are to have upwards to 120 shows per year. “Aside from concerts and dance club nights, Venue's management hopes to open the space to "other performances," and special and corporate events.“ (cited from: http://www.sacramentopress.com/headline/22143/A_Venue_for_all_occasions ) The space definitely has potential to stay alive if it is able to utilize the stage for live performances. Many clubs today have to find alternative uses for their respective spaces, in order to help offset costs and keep the money flow healthy. That is why we are seeing clubs with restaurants fused into one business. Venue does not offer food, but they have a pleasant bartending staff eager to offer a full range of cocktails to quench the thirst of all of their partying patrons.

Once we met up with JJ Flores and Scottobahn, we swiftly found a table that was designated for the DJs and a hostess came to take our order. She was pleasant and personable. We were given our drinks (strong!) and then received follow-up attention but only for one more round. When JJ went on to do his set, his whole entourage moved to the stage area leaving the table behind and our hostess! We were actually quite fortunate to get the liberties that we did in terms of being allowed on the stage with the DJ. A photographer had even been brought in to help create hype within the club and capture more pictures of fabulous ladies having fun for their websites. The Venue concept was created with the idea of a lady out on the town, having fun and being sexy out on the dance floor. Perhaps it’s a young woman new to the work force, just out of school or finishing up and making her own way. She knows how to stretch her dollar and achieve that chic glamour on a budget! This Venue girl essence is embodied in this club in all aspects. It desires to be on par with the big luxurious night clubs of Las Vegas, Miami, LA or New York…yet it’s still got its roots in a more laid back city.

JJ FLORES ON THE DECKS AT VENUE!

On this particular night, we were fortunate to have one of Chicago’s finest House DJs brought into the club to give it an official House “blessing”!! JJ Flores is world renowned and it was SUCH a privilege to get to both see and hear him on the decks at Venue. He was a marvel to watch in action. Sacramento’s very own DJ Katz and newcomer Scottobahn, both did a great job opening for JJ and warming up the crowd. Such a range of experience hit the deck at Venue on this night. I must note that the patrons honestly appeared a little baffled at the House genre. The owners actually seemed pleased with the reaction. Part of their plan?? The changes to the former Empire Center have been radical apparently and switching up the music platform in the main room also seems to be part of the agenda in terms of creating a whole new vibe on R Street! JJ admitted that he had to work at snagging the crowd.

WORKING HARD TO CREATE THE PARTY VIBE!!!

He did so beautifully. Even though I was dancing up a Fetty Be storm, I was observing JJ and watching him work to figure out the crowd. He read them and all of their reactions to the traxs that he was dropping. It wasn’t short of a science. Unspoken, but executed with precision…JJ got the floor vibing, laughing and having a great time right up until closing. The managers were so impressed that they asked if JJ could return!! Venue is a space with much potential. It is going to take some work to nurture a House loving crowd, as it appears that Empire Center may have been a more Top 40 vibe. Although there was Top 40/ Hip-Hop in the smaller dance space.

NOTORIOUS B.I.G.

To some he is known as “the greatest rapper of all time”, but to others he was their New York homie. DJ Sizzahandz recently stated, “To people from Brooklyn NY, March 9th is something like September 11th. Both days changed our lives forever. Let today be a day that we reminisce about the greatest rapper of all time.“ Taken far too early, he died just prior to his 25th birthday on March 9, 1997. He truly was a revolutionary voice in the music industry that was forever silenced far too soon. Mystery and conspiracy theories still surround the death/murder? of this massively influential icon in the Hip-Hop world. Perhaps this is part of the intrigue that continues to keep his legend alive. Yet, Notorious was most famous for raising the profile of the New York Hip-Hop scene within mainstream music. In many ways, it’s not unlike DJ AM’s influence in the DJ culture. He was New York’s Elvis of the mic, a rapper unparalleled by none. Notorious B.I.G. brought international respect and awe to a genre that was truly in it’s infancy. His voice made the world sit up and pay attention to a radical new art form that would eventually resonate profoundly within the music community for generations. We are still touched by his reach in the artists that fill the Top 40 Charts with their vocal raps and chants. Biggie set the bar and today we take a moment to remember a legend who touched countless of lives through his powerful verses and his profound insight.

Christopher George Latore Wallace (May 21, 1972 – March 9, 1997), popularly known as Biggie Smalls or simply Biggie (after a fictional gangster in the 1975 film Let's Do It Again), Frank White (based on a fictional drug baron from the 1990 film King of New York),and by his primary stage name The Notorious B.I.G., was an American rapper.

Raised in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, Wallace grew up during the peak years of the 1980s crack epidemic and started dealing drugs at an early age. When Wallace released his debut album with the 1994 record Ready to Die, he was a central figure in the East Coast hip hop scene and increased New York's visibility at a time when West Coast artists were more common in the mainstream. The following year, Wallace led his childhood friends to chart success through his protégé group, Junior M.A.F.I.A.. While recording his second album, Wallace was heavily involved in the East Coast–West Coast hip hop feud, dominating the scene at the time.

On March 9, 1997, Wallace was killed by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. His double-disc set Life After Death, released fifteen days later, hit #1 on the U.S. album charts and was certified Diamond in 2000. Wallace was noted for his "loose, easy flow",dark semi-autobiographical lyrics andstorytelling abilities. Since his death, a further two albums have been released. MTV ranked him at #3 on their list of The Greatest MCs of All Time.

Posthumous Career

Fifteen days after his death, Wallace's double-disc second album was released as planned with the shortened title of Life After Death and hit #1 on the Billboard 200 charts, after making a premature appearance at #176 due to street-date violations. The record album featured a much wider range of guests and producers than its predecessor. It gained strong reviews and in 2000 was certified Diamond, the highest RIAA certification awarded to a solo hip hop album.

Its lead single, "Hypnotize", was the last music video recording in which Wallace would participate. His biggest chart success was with its follow-up "Mo Money Mo Problems", featuring Sean Combs (under the rap alias "Puff Daddy") and Mase. The video, directed by Hype Williams, is noted for having started the "Shiny Suit" era in hip hop music. Both singles reached #1 in the Hot 100, making Wallace the first artist to achieve this feat posthumously. The third single, "Sky's The Limit", featuring the band 112, was noted for its use of children in the music video, directed by Spike Jonze, who were used to portray Wallace and his contemporaries, including Sean Combs, Lil' Kim, and Busta Rhymes. Wallace was named Artist of the Year and "Hypnotize" Single of the Year by Spin magazine in December 1997.

In mid-1997, Combs released his debut album, No Way Out, which featured Wallace on five songs, notably on the third single "Victory". The most prominent single from the record album was "I'll Be Missing You", featuring Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs, Faith Evans and 112, which was dedicated to Wallace's memory. At the 1998 Grammy Awards, Life After Death and its first two singles received nominations in the rap category. The album award was won by Combs' No Way Out and "I'll Be Missing You" gained the award in the category of "Mo Money Mo Problems".

In December 1999, Bad Boy released Born Again. The record consisted of previously unreleased material mixed with guest appearances including many artists Wallace had never collaborated with in his lifetime. It gained some positive reviews but received criticism for its unlikely pairings; The Source describing it as "compiling some of the most awkward collaborations of his career".Nevertheless, the album sold 3 million copies. Over the course of time, Wallace's vocals would appear on hit songs such as "Foolish" by Ashanti and "Realest Niggas" in 2002, and the song "Runnin' (Dying to Live)" with Shakur the following year. He also appeared on Michael Jackson's 2001 album, Invincible. In 2005, Duets: The Final Chapter continued the pattern started on Born Again and was criticized for the lack of significant vocals by Wallace on some of its songs. Its lead single "Nasty Girl" became Wallace's first UK #1 single. Combs and Voletta Wallace have stated the album will be the last release primarily featuring new material.

They were defined by Guru's monotone flow, some of the most thought-provoking and conscious storytelling of the '90s and DJ Premier's unique innovations in sampling and beat production.

Since the release of their first successful album Step In The Arena in 1991, other duos, groups, solo artists and producers have been borrowing elements of their fundamental sound, leading right up to the current mixtape culture. Back in '91, similar acts such as Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, A Tribe Called Quest and Brand Nubian were coming from a similar sonic space with a similar message: jazzy, soulful tracks and lyrics that had some substance beyond party music with an uplifting and enlightening purpose.

The jazz-influenced, street-prophet style that Gang Starr helped build became the foundation for a whole generation of backpack rappers such as Mos Def and Talib Kweli throughout the '90s and into the '00s. Continuing forward, artists like Common, Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco continued to carry their torch.

Guru's vivid storytelling on tracks like "Soliloquy of Chaos" (from 1992's Daily Operation) can often be heard influencing verses crafted by Raekwon and Ghostface. Painting pictures with words is core to all three artists' lyrical approach.

The path to Jay Electronica and Just Blaze's recent track "Exhibit C" can be traced back to Gang Starr's sound. DJ Premier's sampling wizardry is omnipresent in Just Blaze's body of work, and Jay Electronica's lyrical content is intellectual and visual (not unlike Guru's).

As Gang Starr continue to resonate throughout the hip-hop universe and as Guru's health recovers, we present a lost MTV News interview from 1998. Enjoy!”

CITED FROM: http://newsroom.mtv.com/2010/03/02/guru-gang-starr/?xrs=synd_share_twitter

KEEPING YOU UPDATED ON A LEGEND….WE PRAY FOR GURU’S CONTINUED RECOVERY.
