Recently, I attended an event at another SF nightclub, Manor West, that I’ve been meaning to check out based on the DJ names that I’ve seen on their flyers over time. Finally, the opportunity arrived for me to see one of my all time favorite artists, DJ Fabian from Vegas, put down his vibe on their decks. I know that his music is a guaranteed trip, so I thought I would combine a club review with a fun night out!!

DJ FABIAN

Manor West is a multi-generation club space that has existed before under a different name and management. Apparently, it was previously known as THE BOSS and by a variety of other names. This club was harrowed in 2009 as being the next hot spot to hit SF in the SoMa District, down on Harrison. It offered space and elegance to it’s patrons with lavish leather booths in VIP, handmade chandeliers, partially nude ladies portraits throughout the club…it promised Vegas!!

“Sometimes you just need some space.” stated Urbandaddy.com in their grand opening review of the venue in 2009. Well space or no space, after having tasted the promised fruits of Manor West, I fear it’s left an after taste that’s not quite as sweet as I was led to believe it would be. Let’s just get one thing clear…this is NO Vegas club. Vegas clubs can not thrive in SF very well, in my opinion, as the average SF nightlife patron works and is not in SF on vacation like in Vegas…where money flows. I believe MANY new clubs like to promote the fact that they are similar to a Vegas club, so that it encourages a certain quality of clientele to attend. However, as Manor West demonstrates, the illusion never lasts for long. The essence of Vegas is present in the attempt to make the décor and VIP opulent and exotic. Yet, when the spaces starts to undergo a little scrutiny, it’s not long before wear and tear is noted. The moment a club owner stops putting money into a venue and stops investing in the clubs’ longevity, than it’s no different than trying to make a lady of the night into a super model!!!

The location itself is in a rather rough area, with a combined feel of nightclub alley with a splash of industrial…just to make it feel even more unsafe. When we arrived, we were made to wait outside despite informing the doorman that we were guests of the DJ. He wasn’t rude as many patrons have grumbled about on Yelp etc. However, it wasn’t exactly a red carpet greeting….even though I think they had red carpet on the ground!! As we continued to wait for DJ Fabian, we were approached by another doorman, who swiftly whisked us inside once we had our ID’s checked. We were actually surprised at how pleasant he was! Was it my faux fur coat?!! Perhaps he was worried I was going to get held up if I stood outside in my coat for much longer!! ODDLY enough, we discovered another interesting and rather disturbing fact out about Manor West, formerly known as Boss, during our research!! A homeless woman Robin Kent was beaten to death in March 2008, after a brutal altercation between several homeless people and was left outside the door of the nightclub. Apparently, they were known to squat in front of the venue during it’s closed times. Either way, this MUST have been one of the motivating reasons behind re-opening the club under a new name in ‘09! That’s not exactly great press when attempting to promote a “Vegas-style” club!!

The outside was certainly nothing fabulous and when you entered the venue, it felt initially spacious with a coat check, ATM, and bar right at the onset of the room. The place wasn’t at capacity when we arrived around 11pm. It was about 3/4’s full. We actually didn’t have too long of a wait at the biggest bar either for our drinks and we were served politely by the bartenders. I was enthralled with the grand reclining stretched nude over the bar. It’s a really striking focal point for all of Manor West and truly it’s greatest accent in my opinion. I think “she” keeps an eye on MW and is the Grand Dam!! She is a metaphor for the club in many ways. She promises great delights on the initial perusal, but her beauty has little depth and when examined closely, isn’t as glorious as initially thought! Beauty is skin deep!

Manor West has a local feel to it despite it’s efforts to appear worldly. I’m sure it has it’s regulars who frequent the club and enjoy the same patterns of entertainment. The dance floor is very long and narrow, crammed between two VIP sections. Dancing can be challenging when the club is maxed, as it feels like one is a sardine!! Moving from the bar to the DJ booth is almost impossible and there appears to be little or no VIP cocktail service or table security. I walked up and into the VIP area with no difficulty. Drunk patrons moved with ease into other people’s paid for VIP areas and I’m 100% certain issues arise due to this lack of space regulation. When a client is paying out $300+ for table service, that is what they should receive…service!! Manor West gets it’s customers through the door and the relationship seems to end there. I was fortunate I think in encountering several nice employees, but in my research about what other patrons have experienced, the reviews were horrendous. Many noted a severe lack of customer service and table service being non-existent despite the large price tag.

My experience and perception is also skewed because as a guest of the DJ, one receives certain VIP privileges that the average patron doesn’t, like receiving bottle service in the booth and access to the most exclusive VIP areas. I had a visible vantage point from the booth, so I could observe the club “ in action” and I could note the pros and cons of the venue. Space and the flow of the crowd within the venue were the biggest visible issues. I have encountered more nightclubs that simply fail horribly at space design and utilization. Owners are generally most concerned with VIP and bar space for selling alcohol. DJs are concerned with the booth, sound equipment, decks, bathroom access, site lines, patron access, and dance floor. The patron is concerned with the dance space, access to the bar and sufficient VIP areas for large parties. It’s tough to strike the perfect balance in club design, depending on the owners and investor’s agendas. Manor West works, but by the end of the night, patrons shouldn’t have high expectations for Vegas quality. Many claim the night generally ends in MW on a “ghetto note” and I have to agree…the ambiance goes to that feeling quickly. Even when veteran DJ’s such as Fabian try to weave in some contemporary House vibes, the clientele simply respond more enthusiastically to the Hip Hop and older music that they are familiar with!

Manor West dearly wants to be a swan, but a duckling it shall remain I believe. Thia night was fun, but I think it had MORE to do with the quality of music, the people I was with and the privileges that I had access to, than the actual space itself. Would I go back to Manor West? I would if I knew the DJ or had access to a table and it would depend on which table. MW needs to step up it’s game and MAKE it into an exclusive club with celebrities in the VIP. The table service needs to be more regulated and than the ‘FRAT HOUSE” phenomena might dissipate. The elite, money dropping clientele…will follow, if the ghetto feel is kept out. I’m sure the Grand Dam would approve of a more savory collection of admirers!

I also try to remain neutral, and I encourage you all to try Manor West and form your own opinion. I think it’s truly a hot and cold venue that one either leaves loving it, or moving on to the next party down the road in SoMa!

With the recent Full Moon, I was thinking about you all my night creatures and this cocktail just seemed perfect to share with you all. In fact with Father's Day coming up, invite dad over and serve him up a Blue Moon. He might actually recall it, as it's a legit retro drink that was populare during the sixties!!! Either way you slice it, let's get this summer FINALLY kicked off and do it with some style babies!!! BLUE MOON SEXY!!!!

In honor of the upcoming world event of the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton, I thought it would be a fun idea to post some of the “Kiss Me Kate” cocktails and even a beer that you might wish to try on Friday April 29th! ROYAL FEVER HAS HIT!

‘Kiss Me Kate’ Cocktail – in celebration of the Royal Wedding on 29th April and taking inspiration from Kate Middleton’s popularity as an English rose, Bar Manager Rob Hall has created a bespoke cocktail including rhubarb puree, Calvados and English sparkling rosé Fitzrovia by the Ridgeview vineyard in Ditchling, East Sussex.
The cocktail’s name is a reference to Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew (“Kiss me, Kate, we shall be married o'Sunday” Act II, Scene VII)
Priced at £10.95, the cocktail is available throughout the month of April.

If you like a classic gin martini (is there any other kind?) then the Kiss Me Kate may be your kind of drink. Crisp but booze forward, no citrus other than the bitters, fresh and well balanced. Grutman described the drink as "clean and aromatic and leaves you kissable." Now that is my kind of endorsement.

The ingredients are:
1 tsp Maraska Maraschino
0.25 oz Martini & Rossi Bianco Vermouth
0.25 oz Dolin Dry Vermouth
0.50 oz Lillet Blanc
1.50 oz Beefeater 24 Gin
1 dash of orange bitters
edible flowers
Directions:
Pour all the ingredients (except the flowers) into a pint glass with several pieces of ice. Stir for several minutes. Once the beverage is suitably cold, pour into a coupe glass and garnish with flower(s).

Debut for Royal New Brew Kiss Me, Kate

Limited Edition Beer Concocted for Wedding Celebrations

Posted by Simone Swink

Pubs around Britain have a new tipple on draught for fans of Prince William and Kate. Castle Rock Brewery in Nottingham is mixing up a special real ale bursting with British hops and barley to commemorate the royal wedding.

Head brewer Adrian Redgrove says Kiss Me Kate beer will be "elegant, tasteful and British to the core" with a 5 percent alcohol content, making it a fairly strong way to toast the happy couple. Just one run is being produced, totaling about 40 barrels and 100 bottles for collectors.

The brewery offered to throw open its doors to the royal couple if William and Kate decide to go a more frugal route for their reception. Castle Rock's manager joked to the Nottingham Post that she would be happy to put together a menu of pub grub including beer-battered fish, bangers and mash, and sticky toffee pudding.

Take a look here to watch how Castle Rock brews their beer.

Numerous DJ’s that I respect and follow have been posting events that were taking place at Jax on H and that name kept surfacing!! Soon I realized that this was a legit spot to hit in the 209 and curiosity was killing me!! It’s a very eclectic space that truly suits the underground House acts that have been featured since late last Fall. With a full service bar running almost the full length of the dining space, the venue is able to feature a dance space once the dining tables have been removed. There is even a little VIP area in the back at the end of the bar. This space is definitely NOT a club despite being labeled as one, but rather an ultra funky lounge. It’s a kick back to a college coffee house feel where poets, wanna be artists, bands, DJs, and musicians of all sorts can gather to share their passion with fellow artisans and creatures of the night!

ECLECTIC truly describes this intimate venue!! In keeping with the unique and unusual assortment of art on the wall, the entertainment offered to the public at Jax is equally expansive. One night the air will be filled with deep Blues & Jazz music, the next evening rolling laughter elicited by a comedian will spill out onto H Street, another evening might find introspective sharing of soul-infused artwork and then a night of deep, dirty House beats from the most unexpected talent could crop up on the Jax on H monthly calendar! You just NEVER KNOW what to expect from this fabulous new venue in Modesto. Personally my next task is to hit Jax on H during the day to try some of their incredible looking cuisine. The prices are very reasonable for the creations that you are delivered!! Be sure to befriend Jax on H on Facebook in order to keep up with their schedule. You certainly won’t lack for choices, be it day or night!! I was actually slated to review Metro Nightclub as advised to do by DJ Hex, who previously lived in New Orleans. Unfortunately, that club was not open on Friday nights and THAT was a telling bit of information right there. Ampersand was the next big name that came up when I did a search of NOLA nightlife.

Recently, LP and I were in the historic American party town of New Orleans. It was my first time visiting the city and I was very eager to take in all of the sites and sounds of Bourbon Street and the historic Gas Lamp District. With it’s famous reputation for incredible Jazz clubs, music-filled streets and a soul overflowing with Mardi Gras and VooDoo, the prospects of finding hawt clubs seemed promising. The city certainly doesn’t lack for a colorful past and a lack of nightlife. We were enthralled while taking in all of the sites and sounds that filled the small narrow streets of Old New Orleans. There were boutiques, jazz clubs and historical points of interest EVERYWHERE.

We were located at the Loews Hotel very near to the heart of the buzz and so we were able to walk to most restaurants and attractions or get an inexpensive cab ride. With old buildings dating back to the late 1700’s, the city was definitely legit in terms of possessing a vast array of cultural influences from all of the peoples that have settled in the city over the past 250+ years. The African and French cultures have both played a major role in helping to shape what is now present day New Orleans. The radical differences between the cultures can be found everywhere from the food, to the entertainment, to the architecture, the history, the shopping, to the city’s very layout. It’s a city OF contrasts, and at times it challenges personal boundaries of what is socially acceptable. Many have coined this city “evil” (President Bush Jr. refused to visit this city) due to it’s historical association with Voodoo, music, gambling, Mardi Gras, the sex trade and partying in general. Yet, despite this, people from all over the world still come to experience the unique flavor that only New Orleans can offer. On one side of any given street you might find an adult store and across the street find an upscale hotel. It boggles the mind. That is what New Orleans DOES…it challenges your sense of right and wrong and your very internal morals.

I have to admit that we delighted in strolling the uneven, aged European-like streets and browsing through the windows at the seemingly endless rows of jazz clubs, boutiques, restaurants, and other curiosity shops. The streets were lined with visitors drinking, laughing and generally just, “taking it all in”. Since the buildings are so old, many possess several stories with balconies and one can ONLY imagine how it all looks at the peak of the Mardi Gras celebration. PURE EUPHORIC CHAOS. This part of the city did not disappoint. We followed the suggestions of DJ Hex and made sure to sample a Po Boy sandwich and hit the world famous Cafe Du Monde for a beignet and a chicory coffee. This was all a pre-cursor to doing my club review near to the end of the trip. I was eagerly anticipating a brilliant club vibe, based on the hype that we discovered in Old New Orleans.

We decided to walk to Club Ampersand, as it appeared to be relatively close to the famed restaurant “Brennans”, that we had chosen to visit prior to our night on the town. In actuality, the club was located on the outskirts of the old town and more so in a run down part of the city. There was a rather industrial feel to the area and I felt a little illl at ease as we approached the building. There was no line outside which gave me concern, as it was already 11pm. We had purchased tickets online earlier in the day, but it was obvious that this was not necessary. Only a handful of people were inside milling around at the main bar and some hardcore acid House was resonating through the space. On my first impression, the club really possessed an underground GOTH-like feel to it. It had a dark interior, dim lighting, old Victorian accents such as chandeliers and wood, as well as some freakish features like morphing faces in frames and a VIP room in an old bank vault!

The place looked like it definitely possessed character and the main bar area and VIP space located directly to the right was very classy and nicely appointed. On this night, due to lack of patrons, the upstairs space was blocked off, so it prevented me from investigating the space further. There were nice VIP booths and tables for bottle service and like I said, some unusual spaces for privates parties. As seen below.

If I was to sum up my overall impression of this club, it would have been that it felt tired and perhaps a little overused. We had picked a night and a time of year that obviously didn’t shed the best of light on this venue. There was practically no one there by midnight and the patrons that were present appeared to be friends of the DJs that were spinning that night. The GoGo girls were all dressed in Burlesque attire, with one of them being a drop dead look alike for Dita Von Teese. There was something unearthly too about the whole place. The patrons truly looked and felt like night creatures. It had a swingers bar feel to it as well.

We sat for awhile at the bar in the VERY worn bar stools sipping our relatively strong cocktails and admired the interesting lights suspended over our heads. I laughed with LP, as the bulbs themselves looked like miniature penises hanging overhead. A coincidence?? In this city, I think not.

I knew that I needed to dig a little bit more into the history of this club to find out why it felt so worn, when the website gave the space a relatively new upscale presentation (forgiving photography, trick lighting??). Boys Noize had JUST played there too for Halloween!! The bartender told me that Ampersand had been around since the late 90’s. BINGO. NO WONDER the space appeared tired. It had survived over 10 years of Mardi Gras revelers and of course the ravages of Katrina too. In hindsight, I guess the club was actually in good shape considering it’s history and length of operation. Being that it’s located on the fringe of the historic downtown core, I think that it’s MAIN patrons most likely are locals or die hards like us who search out the legit dance music club scene in any given city. Sadly, I think that this business must suffer from being in the shadow of notorious old New Orleans. People from all over the world come to this city to see the famous Bourbon Street district and as a result, it’s my guess that fewer people go in search of nightlife beyond the jazz clubs and lounges….OR they are too drunk to find it!!

Ampersand is a cool name. I have to admit…it’s catchy and I think in it’s prime, the club must have been a hub for the young NOLA dance music loving crowd. Over time and lack of up keep though, the space is now like a lady in her golden years. The age just can’t be kept disguised no matter how dim the lights are kept. The wrinkles and ravages of time are apparent and with the smell of any decay, the people will avoid what is not shiny, dazzling and NEW. Would I recommend you go there?? Maybe during Mardi Gras, as the whole CITY will be overflowing at that point. Otherwise, I’d stick to the downtown area and enjoy the essence of historic nightlife!

IN ORDER TO KEEP OPINIONS BALANCED….HERE IS AN ARTICLE THAT WAS POSTED BY NOLA ENTERTAINMENT MEDIA.
