Wednesday, September 2, 2009 Since his death on June 25, Flash Mobs celebrating the life and music of Michael Jackson have been popping up in cities all over the world. This is clearly not surprising that people are reacting to his death but it is fascinating to see that people are using flash mobs as an outlet to express themselves.
According to Wikipedia the first flash mob was created in Manhattan in 2003 and almost immediately became a popular form of expression. Which ironically is exactly the opposite of their original intention which was to highlight cultural conformity. After that first event in 2003, there have been several notable Flash Mobs over the past 6 years including a Worldwide Pillow Fight in March 2008 in which 25 Cities around the globe participated in and a Silent Disco that caused some chaos on the London Underground in which over 4000 people participated. Clearly it appears that Flash Mobs as a form of expression are here to stay.
Back to the Michael Jackson Tribute. It has been interesting watching the videos pop up on YouTube over the last 6-8 weeks from various cities around the world, where a "spontaneous" mob begins dancing to various Jackson songs for several minutes and then dissipates back into the crowd. These event usually occur in a larger open space within a major Metropolitan City or area. It appears that first one happened in Victoria, BC on Canada Day. Leave it to those Crazy Canucks!
Victoria
Events then followed on in Stockholm, Paris, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Montreal, Seattle and Hollywood (at least those are ones that appeared on YouTube - there may be more unrecorded events).
Stockholm
Seattle
Quite an amazing phenomena really. Maybe somebody will organize a Flash Mob Day across the US for DJ AM? That would quite a fitting tribute to the genius that he was. Just let us know the time and the place and the Buzz will certainly be there!

I'm speechless when I look at this picture and think that THE Michael Jackson has died. A legend and cultural icon has passed before our eyes, as we inadvertantly and unknowningly just took part in a global "event". It reminds us of great moments in history like when Kennedy was shot, or when Princess Diana was killed and of course when the "King of Rock and Roll" Elvis Presley died. These deaths shocked the world, as the world wasn't ready to say good-bye to such influential human beings. This week has served as SUCH a reminder to the world that life is precious and that we shouldn't take anything for granted. Twitter has been over-capacity all week and Anderson Cooper and Larry King are exhausted.
From seeing, "The Voice" of Iran "Neda" die on TV in front of millions of viewers, to seeing the cancerous decay of the once beautiful 1970's bombshell Farrah Fawcett, to witnessing the humbling demise of The Tonight's Show cohost Ed McMahon and finally to seeing the real curtain call for 50 yr. old "King of Pop" Michael Jackson, as he was rushed via paramedics to the hospital in full cardiac arrest...ALL gone before we had a chance to say good-bye. Yes, we've all been rattled to various degrees by the passing of such influential souls. In this time of turmoil and unrest, I'm reminded that it's SO important to take time with your loved ones and to always part on a good note. We all leave the dancefloor eventually peeps and so make sure your last dance is your best dance!

Thursday, July 2, 2009 The Buzz MP3 player is located in the right column on the bottom of the page!
Jackson's breathy ballads were seldom as catchy as his poppier cuts. But thanks to some burbling guitar and percussion, along with that echoing chorus vocal, this one sticks.

Three years after We Are the World, Jackson thinks globally on this preachy single, which builds from synth-pop to a gospel anthem complete with choir.

The J5's second hit mines a slightly deeper and funkier groove, with Michael and his brothers sharing the vocals -- and making it all look as easy as the chorus claims. Bonus points for the midsong get-down breakdown.

This lightheartedly poppy duet with Paul McCartney may be just a silly love song, but just try not to snap your fingers and sway along.

One of the last hits of The Jacksons' initial run, the punchy horns, zippery synths and whiplash backup vocals on this disco workout foreshadow Jackson's later work.

This cut from MJ's solo breakthrough Off the Wall is true to its word, upgrading the standard dance-floor template with everything from sweet strings and stabbing horns to Latin percussion.

Over the years, John Landis's landmark video has overshadowed this song itself, but even without the dancing zombies, it's a hoot -- especially when Vincent Price raps.

The first track on Jackson's colossal Thriller album sets the stage with a percolating beat, twitchy guitars and funky horns -- and that unforgettable "Mama-say, mama-saw, mama-kusaw" refrain

From the ominously chugging bassline and four-on-the-floor beat to the syncopated synth pulses and shivery backup vocals, this is easily the catchiest pop song ever written about a stalker (sorry, Sting).

The Jackson 5's debut single -- and the first in a record-setting string of four straight No. 1 hits -- is also a slice of soul-pop perfection, from its nimble Motown bassline and slinky guitar to Michael's pubescent enthusiasm.

At his peak, Jacko was so bulletproof he could deliver a line like "Your butt is mine" with a straight face -- and everybody bought it.

MAY YOU DANCE AND SING FREELY AND WITH PEACE,WHEREVER YOU REST NOW MICHAEL. I TRULY LIKE WHAT MC HAMMER STATED...WHEN WE LOOK TO THE SKY FILLED WITH STARS AT NIGHT, THE NEW STAR SHINING DOWN ON US FROM THE HEAVENS IS MICHAEL!

Michael Jackson, seemed to be as fit as a fiddle. That was on 23 June 2009. CNN confirms he wasn't lip-syncing.One of the last rehearsals of Michael Jackson, two weeks before is death, has been almost entirely filmed. A DVD should come soon.

"Michael Jackson was a huge part of my childhood. At 5, I was sliding across the kitchen floor in my leather jacket with white tape on the ends of my fingers. It only felt right to pay tribute. Here is a video mix I compiled as quickly as I could. As I watched back over the footage at this later age, I realized what a true icon, inventor, and humanitarian he truly was. He was the greatest performer who ever lived, no more, no less. May he rest in peace. DON LYNCH " CITED FROM: http://www.donlynch.com
